I hesitated to write a review on this film or not. Although there are great actors in this film I don’t think it was a good story I can highly recommend. It wasn’t as bad to say avoid watching it, actually it was the most neutral film I have ever seen.
This film was made in 2006 and I haven’t heard about it until last week. A friend of mine mentioned it, so I decided to watch it. It was written and directed by Bart Freundlich. I checked the list of films he directed and I haven’t seen any of them. His main films were World Traveller and The Rebound. I hope that ones were better. He married Julianne Moore in 2003. The classification of this film is 15 years and older because it contains moderate sex references and strong language. The running time is only 96 minutes (it seemed longer). It is a drama-comedy as genre.
Main roles: --------------- David Duchovny – Tom Julianne Moore – Rebecca Maggie Gyllenhaal – Elaine Billy Crudup – Tobey Eva Mendes - Faith
The story ------------ The story is about the relationship of two couples. Tom and Rebecca is a married couple with two kids living in Manhattan. Tom is sex addict Rebecca tries everything to avoid sex as often as Tom wants. The other couple is Tobey and Elaine. Tobey is Rebecca’s brother. They are together for 7 years but not married. They live a busy life, especially Elaine. In their case Elain wants to have sex more frequently than Toby. The two women and the two men are in really good relationship so they talk a lot on their mobile with each other. Instead of solving their current problem, they call the other couple and complain a lot. These conversations should be funny but as they are not deep at all they are rather boring. So both couples break up. Can they solve their problems? Is there a chance for all of them to be happy again? I won’t ruin the end of this predictable film. If you don’t have anything else on your list but watching this film, then give it a go.
My opinion -------------- Well, the actor’s names on the cover of the DVD were very attractive. I thought this film will be a great fun. There were two-three plots were I laughed out loud but that was all. I wouldn’t call it even a drama because the depth of the characters was missing. I think it was a big mistake that the same man wrote and directed this film. As I mentioned before I haven’t seen any other film of Bart Freundlich but according to this film I say he is not as talented enough. Probably the other actors undertook the role because of Julianne Moore and not because of the brilliant screenplay.
For David Duchovny was easy to play the role of a sex addict. I saw him in other films than X-files and I have to admit that his performance in this film was quite poor. He wasn’t passionate about this film and this made his performance even worse.
Julianne Moor played quite well. She was an actress and a mother of two. I wouldn’t say she was brilliant because she wasn’t. Actually I would say it was average.
I haven’t seen Maggie Gyllenhaal and Billy Crudup before. Their performance was slightly better than David’s and Julianne’s. Eva Mendes had only a little role but that was enough. She is beautiful but not a very talented actress.
So to sum up, I was disappointed after watching this film. I waited the moment when a twist comes in the story but it is predictable, there are no deep emotions just sex referrals and it is not funny at all. My favourite scene was when Rebecca eats a whole slice of cake at once. Naturally she vomits it but this is a good excuse why she cannot have sex. This was one of the funniest scenes…
