It's hard to believe this film is 14 years old but it is! I'm not a fan of Lenny Henry much but I do quite like this comedy.
The film has a rather complicated plot but here's the main story. Basically, Miles Pope (Lenny Henry) is an actor who really wants to be doing well on the stage but finds himself entwined with the mob after finding out his producer Leland Carver (Frank Langella) has a criminal past. As part of his protection, he pretends to be different people including James Brown's brother. He also dons the make up and becomes an older white man. Not quite the acting he had in mind! The plot is based on an Eddie Murphy Saturday Night Live sketch and Lenny takes the part Eddie Murphy played earlier.
There is a little bit of violence in this film - guns for instance - but not too much. Of course there's also swearing. There isn't any "gross out" humour here, I'm pleased to say but there is quite an uncomforable moment where Miles takes on the guise of a gay stereotype, which I didn't like. However, despite this, it is at times quite a thoughtful film - Miles is shocked to suddenly find himself being treated better just because he now looks like someone of a different race. It's a wry comment on life in the US, set against music from the likes of Gladys Knight and Ziggy Marley.
As for the make up, it's really good. Lenny said he walked down the street and said "hello" to his sister while she was over there during filming and she nearly died! She seriously didn't know it was him until he spoke.
Clearly, Lenny Henry was trying to become a bit more famous in the USA with this film and it didn't quite happen. The film has a good premise but doesn't quite work and there's no indication it would have been any better with Eddie Murphy in the title role.
"True Identity" is a certificate 15. I can recommend borrowing this first to see if you think it is worth buying (it's about £4 on Amazon). It is also sometimes on TV, albeit late at night.
Advantages: Brilliant fun and a fab cast! Disadvantages: None!
...what the hell you're saying.
Enrico: Am I too late? Look I won a coin, a gold coin, isn't it wonderful? Look at this room, what a beautiful room. Have you seen this room?
Randy: Yes! We?re in it.
Donald: I can do whatever I want. I'm eccentric. Grr! Grr!
Enrico: (looking at cocktail sausages on the buffet) Ooooh look! Cock doggies!

Advantages: Slight comedy Disadvantages: Confusing, not very intresting
...Rumour Has It, released on DVD in 2005, follows a female in her mid-twenties named Sarah Huttinger as she tries to find her trueidentity.
After agreeing to marry boyfriend Jeff, Sarah becomes hesitant and worries that marriage may not be the right thing for her at this time in her life. It is clear in the movie that Sarah struggles to relate to her family, feeling like the 'odd -one -out'. Her family mainly consists of her sister, (Mena Suvari), her father, (Richard Jenkins), and her grandmother, (Shirley MacLaine), she sadly, does not have a mother.
The whole movie follows Sarah, as she hopes to find out more about her family, where she came from, how they lived, and one issue seems to be that Sarah is seeking to find her real father.
I, on a personal note, feel that this was not the best of films. It did, however, have...

Advantages: Disney magic! Disadvantages: None, as long as you're a kid at heart!
...hypnotises him until he believes it.
Meanwhile, Aladdin has of course rubbed the lamp to reveal the fun-loving, seriously hyperactive Genie who frees them from the cave. Sat in an oasis, the Genie helps Aladdin to find a way to woo Jasmine by making him a Prince. In no time, he arrives in the Palace and, after a few misunderstandings and death threats, they are ready to announce their engagement to the city. However, Aladdin is nervous as he wants to tell Jasmine that he is really a street rat, not a lofty Prince. Not to worry though, Jafar recaptures the lamp and claims the Genie as his own, revealing Aladdin's trueidentity and becoming the Sultan himself.
With time running out, can Aladdin save the day and does Jasmine still love him after the revelation of his trueidentity? It's a Disney film so what do you think?!
