Norman Wisdom became an instant movie star with the release ofTrouble in Storein 1953. ... more
Playing a character called Norman, he brought his familiar stage and television personality to the big screen as a young man with the ambition to become a window dresser in a major department store. Ever lovable victim of his own clumsiness, all Norman's efforts to improve himself result in chaos. That is, until he meets Sally (Lana Morris), the girl of his dreams. Then things turn disastrous. Costarring Margaret Rutherford,Trouble in Storeintroduced Wisdom's self-penned song which would become his theme, "Don't laugh at Me ('cause I'm a Fool)". The film became a massive box-office hit and won Wisdom a BAFTA Award. Very much of its time, admittedly, it's still highly entertaining. In 1956 the title of his latest film,Up in the Worldaccurately described Norman Wisdom's career. This was the great British comedian's fourth hit in as many years, this time finding himself employed as window cleaner to Lady Banderville (Ambrosine Phillpotts). Apart from having hundreds of windows to polish, things would be going fine for Norman if it weren't for the endless practical jokes played by Lady Banderville's son, Sir Reginald (Michael Caridia). However, when the irritating Reggie is kidnapped, Norman has the chance to prove himself a hero, and it just might impress his beautiful costar Maureen Swanson. By now Wisdom was set on a winning formula, working with much the same team as on his three previous smashes, including Jerry Desmonde as Major Willoughby, who had starred in bothTrouble in Store(1953) andMan of the Moment(1955). --Gary S Dalkin

Norman is working behind the scenes in the stock room of a large dept store. He has ambitions to be a window dresser. However whilst trying to 'move up in the world', he falls in love with one of the shop girls.
One evening they uncover a plot to rob the store and, ridiculously, manage to foil the robbers.

~Opinions~ *********** Norman gives us a song along the way and I really do wish he wouldn't sing.
There are some jokes pushed at the class system in 'those days' but they don't ring true today.
Not one of his best movies but still a good laugh. This movie is not as funny as some of his others. But it is still highly watchable and has all his trade mark twitches and shouting.

Welcome
Welcome indeed to my very first Ciao review...
I have read some of your reviews to see how it is done. I hope I won't disappoint you.
I decided to begin with a DVD containing two wonderful films, starring the inimicable Norman Wisdom.
The first film is entitled TroubleInStore. It is the first film Norman ever made.
The second is entitled Up In The World.
A litle wisdom on Wisdom
Norman Wisdom was born in 1915. Sadly he lead an unhappy childhood. His father was violent and abusive and his mother abandoned the family in 1924. Subsequently, Norman and his brother were placed in care.
Aged 13, Norman found his first job down a mine. Aged 14, he joined the army. In between he was also a waiter and an errand boy
It was in the army that Norman began to entertain. He learned to dance and play a number of musical ...

Advantages: Sureal, unique, sometimes hilarious, often thoughtful, the only sci-fi film I know of with a giant beechball alien... Disadvantages: Probably all of the above if you just don't get it...
of equipment when the film was first made. It does detract slightly from the film, but not a great deal. Also on the DVD are biographies for Carpenter and O'Bannon, which are nice enough though I would have liked more information than was given.
Overall this is a film you're either going to love or hate. Personally I love it, but with the poor sound and slightly iffy image quality, I don't really feel I can give it 5 stars. So 4 stars and a recommendation - but only if you're a sci-fi fan with a warped sense of humour! (As with all cult classics, you'll probably ether love it or hate it.)
Availability - you shouldn't have any trouble finding it in any DVDstore, though it won't be quite as readily available as the mass-market classics and modern films. Amazon.co.uk have the basic DVD listed for £5.99 or the 30th Anniversary Collector ...
