documentary of the Third Reich's 1934 Nuremberg Party Rally. Commissioned by Hitler in 1934 and directed by Leni Riefenstahl, this documentary covers the events of the Sixth Nuremberg Party Congress. The Original intention was to document the early days of the NSDAP, so future generations could look back and see how the Third Reich began. In reality, Triumph of the Will shows historians how the Nazi state drew in the masses through propaganda and also how Adolf Hitler had a unique and terrifying ability to entice crowds to his beliefs by the very power of his words.Triumph of the Will was released in 1935 and rapidly became one of the better-known examples of propaganda in film history. Riefenstahl's techniques, such as moving cameras, the use of telephoto lenses to create a distorted perspective, aerial photography, and revolutionary approach to the use of music and cinematography, have earned Triumph of the Will recognition as one of the greatest films in history. Riefenstahl won several awards, not only in Germany but also in the United States, France, Sweden, and other countries. The film was popular in the Third Reich and elsewhere, and has continued to influence movies, documentaries, and commercials to this day, even as it raises the question over the dividing line between art and morality.

This film perhaps more than any other demonstrates the frightening reality that was 'the Nazi Party' and the dangers that the future held for the rest of Europe. This definitive edition also features a bonus disc; "March to the Fuhrer" which documents the rise of the Hitler Youth Movement.

evil--more watchable examples are being made today. And not as a historical example of blind propaganda--those (much shorter) movies are merely laughable now. No, Riefenstahl's masterpiece--and it is a masterpiece, politics aside--combines the strengths of documentary and propaganda into a single, overwhelmingly powerful visual force. Riefenstahl was hired by the Reich to create an eternal record of the 1934 rally at Nuremberg, and that'sexactly what she does. You might not become a Nazi after watching her film, but you will understand too clearly how Germany fell under Hitler's spell. The early crowd scenes remind one of nothing so much as Beatles concert footage (if only their fans were so well behaved!).Like the Fascists it monumentalises,Triumph of the Willoverlooks its own weaknesses--at nearly two hours, the speeches tend to drone on, and the repeated visual motifs are a little over-hypnotic, especially for modern viewers. But the occasional iconic vista (banners lining the streets of Nuremberg, Hitler parting a sea of 200,000 party members standing at attention) will electrify anyone into wakefulness. --Grant Balfour, Amazon.com

To appreciate the film is to look first into the brilliance and artistry of one of the greatest women directors of our time. In the early years of sound film, Riefenstahl was ahead of her time, employing new filming techniques built on and improved later by others.
Hitler and his inner circle of ministers, including Josef Goebbels, are at their malevolent best, seen almost surreal-like through the camera lens which travels everywhere, from the approach to Nuremberg, the preparations of the thousands upon thousands of young soldiers, panning on a slice of their military lives. We see young soldiers joking, laughing, others preparing giant pots of food, still others engaged in ablutions. Then we see the youthfulness of the Hitler Youth, the fresh faces, the fear. Riefenstahl doesn't spare the viewer. Very little dialogue for about half an hour, so the viewer is given snapshot scenes of the streets, the expectation on the faces of the populace, the badges, little details that warn more than spoken words of a coming threat, and it's an excellent technique, letting the viewer make up his own mind as to what he is observing.
It's only 1934, the post Von Hindenburg period and Hitler's voice when he does start with his speeches is powerful, mesmerising and one cannot wonder that he could bring the masses and especially his military under his spell. And that is what this film brings home with gut-wrenching reality: The War is coming. Viewing it with the hindsight of knowledge of W.W.II, then one realises the maniacal leader's power. It is a well made, thoroughly thought-provoking documentary.

Advantages: Good fun, entertaining, well realised Disadvantages: Weak plot
Island and takes it over. While most of the Tracy family are stranded in space, The Hood intends to use the Thunderbirds to rob banks, including the interestingly named ?Bank of London?. But he hadn?t counted on Alan, Fermat and Tintin still being at loose on the Island?
So, no Oscars there for storyline, but it really doesn?t matter too much, when you can get lost in the film anyway. The sight of the Thunderbirds landing in London gave me a kind of childhood thrill, much as seeing the Cybermen marching through London did in Doctor Who.
Compared to the brilliance of Harry Potter 3, which I saw afterwards, Thunderbirds comes off badly, but as a piece of entertaining escapism, it?s a triumph. Sit back and enjoy it. I will definitely be buying the DVD, when it is released.
Long live nostalgia! ...
