Advantages good to see cage and kidman together

Disadvantages bland & phoned in

Just been to see this at the cinema last week. I’ll be honest, I went to see this because the time it was showing was convenient and there wasn’t much else on. I left feeling a bit disappointed. You expect more from a film starring Nicholas Cage and Nicole Kidman (and Directed by Joel ‘Falling Down’ Schumacher) and you get the sense that these two actors (especially Kidman, who recently starred in ‘Just Go With It’ with Adam Sandler) are getting offered scripts of poorer and poorer quality as they get older. I read in a film magazine that this was meant to be psychological thriller but believe me it’s skin-deep and there is no character study at all. I won’t spoil the plot too much but it’s a basic home invasion story, but the bad guy burglars are pretty one dimensional. They shout and swear every 5 seconds and one of them, rather strangely and far-fetched, falls in love so deeply in less than a minute that he is willing to kill his brother! I remember going to see Hostage years ago and the person I saw it with thought it was really good. I thought it was really bland, predictable with shallow, uninteresting characters … basically a Bruce Willis vehicle. Like I said, some people liked it so I suppose there is an audience for this type of film, but for me it really struggled to get the rating of ‘average’.
