Trentham Gardens Ballroom was the area's finest dance hall. This video charts its history ... more
from the early 1930s, through its use by the Bank of England during the War, to its demolition in 2003 and the regeneration of Trentham Gardens. People danced to the bands of Norman Jones, Reg Bassett - and top names like Joe Loss. They met their future husbands and wives here. The Last Waltz event in 2002 was a unique chance to re-create the golden age of ballroom dancing at Trentham. Experts and local people help tell the story - and along the way we see fascinating film of the Gardens from the 1930s through to today.
Advantages: Perceptive, real, fascinating Disadvantages: maybe follows too many groups at the start
Mad Hot Ballroom is a feature-length documentary that follows the progress of the ballroom dancing program at several public schools and their acheivements at city-wide competition. The schools are in the more disadvantaged areas of the city: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan (a disadvantaged bit), and Queens. The program began in 1994 and has grown to around 6000 kids in different schools.
At first the film is quite difficult to follow, as it follows at least three groups of children and it's hard to keep track of who's in which school group. As the competition progresses to the later stages, the field is narrowed till it focuses on one school in the final, competing for the challenge cup.
The film is fascinating on many levels - watching how one teacher and her class deal with losing a particular round is a real insight into ...
Advantages: Classic fairy story set to the outrageous backdrop of ballroom dancing Disadvantages: Cliched, trite, predictable.
This perceptive and well-executed film still after nearly 15 years since its release comes over as one of the most original films I've ever watched. The storyline is nothing more than a re-working of a classic fairy tale of handsome princes and ugly frogs (or dance partners) and yet the magical retelling make this film the success it is.

His mother is shocked and dismayed that Scott could throw his chance of the title, his dance coach, Les Kendell is similarly gob smacked but most effected of all is Scott dance partner, who quits dancing with Scott and takes up ...
Advantages: A great gift for gardeners Disadvantages: There's not enough episodes!
This makes a great gift for keen kitchen gardeners. The gardener in the series was a gardener in a real Victorian kitchen garden and shows exactly how they did it - you can pick up some really good hints and tips. You see the garden throughout the year, too, and it's easy on the eyes!
Throughout the series you see the transformation as the neglected walled kitchen garden at Chiltern Foliat (in Berkshire) is restored to its former glory as a working kitchen garden.
Step back in time and learn how the Victorians grew pineapples in their greenhouses, and how they supplied freshly grown produce to the 'big house' every day of the year. Find out about Victorian seeds, and which heritage varieties are still worth growing today.
The DVD special features are a bit light: an interview with presenter Peter Thoday and a History File. ...
