Director: Ron Underwood Producer: Gale Anne Hurd, Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson Writers: Brent Maddock, S.S. Wilson, Ron Underwood, Stars: Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross Victor Wong and Reba McEntire.
Released in early 1990 the tongue-in-cheek sort of thriller/horror was so bad it was worth watching.
**BRIEF PLOT**
Valentine McKee, (played by Kevin Bacon) and Earl Bass, (played by Fred Ward) are two men living in a small ex-mining town in the middle of the Nevada desert. Some of the other residents in the small town consist of a survivalist couple Burt Gummer, (played by Michael Gross) and his wife Heather, (played by Reba McEntire). Also the general store owner Walter Chang, (played by Victor Wong)
There is a new arrival in the small town, Rhonda LeBeck, (played by Finn Carter), a student who is studying mild earthquakes in and around the town and the surrounding desert.
When Val and Earl decide to leave the town in search of pastures new they find more than they bargained for whilst passing through the desert.
They begin to stumble across a few dead bodies, men and beast, and soon realise that there is something in the desert that is out to kill the people of the small town.
**IN CONCLUSION**
When I looked at the DVD casing for this one I thought I was in for a gripping horror, with the razor toothed beast emerging from the bottom of the case, pluoghing upwards to devour everything and anything in its way…almost like the cover from the Jaws movie… Then when I put the DVD into the tray I didn't quite get what I was expecting.
The movie begins well, starting in the arid small town, introducing the two unsuspecting heroes to the audience. But it is not long into the movie that it starts to become a little bit silly indeed, (although not silly enough to turn off )
When Val and Earl discover what is hiding underneath the sands of the desert the entertainment value remains but becomes more comical, as the reason for the tremors around the desert are unearthed, leading to one of the weirdest creatures ever to grace our screens.
The acting is a bit questionable and the special effect team need to go back to school but if you don't take the movie as a true thriller/horror, more a comedy/thriller type, then this can be an entertaining movie all round.
Would I recommend this movie….? Well yes, why not… It is entertaining if a little on the silly side. The story is not really original but the banter between Val and Earl makes the movie worth watching as they try to stop the fat mass of crinkly slug monster from eating the entire town.
Go on…give it a go…you may just laugh yourself silly.

Advantages: Val and Earl, 80's genius, excellent combination of horror and comedy! Disadvantages: May not be flashy in the effects department for some!
