I went to see this movie a few weeks ago, at a special preview, and I thought I'd better write an opinion before parents rush to take their children during half -term.
From the title, you may guess that this film is based on Treasure Island, but it the usual Disney way, it is a little different from the original (mainly it is set in the future). To explain, let me tell you about the film:
PLOT
Jim Hawkins is a bright little boy who enjoys the legend of "Treasure Planet", and goes to bed reading the animated book every night. He is extremely good at school, and is always building futuristic projects of some description or another. This all changes as he gets older and his father leaves home. Jim's mother is left to raise him alone, whilst she runs her Tavern, which also doubles as a sort of "Space Port". Teenage Jim is a bit of a tear-away, and is always in trouble with
the law. (Policemen are robots by the way). After one particular incidence, the police tell Jim's mother that if he does not reform, then he will go to a juvenile prison. Shortly after the police leave, a Spaceship lands, and the mysterious alien inside is on the brink of death; Jim helps the man inside the Tavern where he gives him a (well what looks like) a golden ball, and mumbles something about treasure and to protect it from Pirates (who's names I currently forget. The Alien then promptly dies. Soon after pirates arrive at the tavern and burn it down whilst looking for the golden ball that Jim has been given.
Once the pirates leave, Jim and his mother’s friend (who consequently is a dog like astronomer) discover that the “golden ball” is in fact a map to the Treasure Planet that Jim had heard of as a boy. Rather quickly the pair decide to find a ship and crew to go forth and find the said planet.
I shall skip ahead a bit; the Ships Captain is both female and feline; the ship looks like a regular ship (sails, mast etc), but it flies in space.
Aboard the ship Jim is befriended by “John Silver” who is part cyborg; he has a pink pet called Morph, who ironically can “Morph”. Morph is by far the funniest character in the whole of Treasure Planet, and probably the only part of the film that young children will enjoy. John Silver (surprise surprise) is the loveable baddie, who has conned him and his crew on board the ship to pose as legitimate crew. Silver provides a father figure for Jim, whom he starts to look up to.
After a few twists and turns (after discovering a friendly but mad robot B.E.N), and the crew divided (by this time Silver and gang have been discovered) everyone arrives at the planet where things quickly go wrong, and the planet explodes due to the treasure being disturbed. Jim manages to guide everyone out of trouble by finding a portal into “safe” space near earth via the map (it’s a bit complicated to explain properly).
Anyway, once everyone is back near Earth, Jim persuades Silver to become “good”, although he realises that he will never be able to give up his quest to find treasure. Silver then gives Jim the little bit of treasure that he managed to keep from the Treasure Planet so that Jim’s mother can rebuild her tavern. (Very saccerine, I could have puked). Jim becomes a reformed character and joins the futuristic Navy. His mother’s tavern does better than ever, and her friend and the female captain get married, and have several children (some are dogs, and some are cats). So big happy ending, in typical Disney style.
Okay so I’ve given a fairly potted plot, but this is partly because this film isn’t really that memorable. I went with a group of people (including younger siblings), and the two people that enjoyed it the most, were the two adult males I was with. I wouldn’t really say that this was a film to take the youngest members of the family to see, but might be more interesting for the pre/early teens in the family. Unless you have free tickets like I did, wait for the video. Err enjoy.
PS there are also few songs in the film, but I'm not sure whether that's a disadvantage or not!!
