After months and months of waiting (release date kept changing) it finally arrived, the most important part of my childhood, well apart from Lego. How many of us can remember that awe inspiring theme tune that led us to believe that there really was "More Than Meets The Eye".
As soon as the disk is loading you are treated to introductory footage from the BBC's "I Love 1984" with celebrates telling you what they remember best about the cartoon. After that you can either watch the movie or have a look at the special features that they have put onto the disk. I'll tell you about them before talking about the movie.
You can have a look at the original theatrical trailer which brings back memories, and there is a musical picture gallery which has stills and concept artwork from the film. The crowning feature has to be Takara's "The Four Soldiers from the Sky". Though the dubbing and translation are a bit poor, it's still a rare opportunity to see a Transformers episode that never aired outside of Japan. There are not a lot of special features and the menu is a bit long winded but on the whole it's not that bad. The extra episode is probably the best feature on the disk because a trailer is just a trailer and the musical gallery can get a bit annoying after a while. Still the whole point of owning this DVD is for the Movie itself and that makes up for everything.
Now for the movie itself...
When this animated film arrived in American cinemas in the 1980s, both the Transformer robot toys and television show were at the peak of their popularity. Transformers The Movie took these childhood heroes and transformed them into film stars. The animation is nothing like the animated films of today but it stands out there as one of the all time classic children's movies. The plot is little more than an advert for the new toys of the time, many of which show up as main characters in the film (Hot Rod, Kup, Ultra Magnus, Galvatron, etc). However none of this matters, the action sequences are spectacular especially the battle for Autobot City. What really makes this film is the celeberaties who give their voices to the characters, Leonard Nimoy, Judd Nelson, Robert Stack, Eric Idle and even Orson Welles as Unicron.
The story line for the film, in case you don't already know, is that it is the year is 2005 and the mighty Autobots are waging a deadly battle with the Decepticons, as usual. Unicron, a sinister planet and new force of evil has just entered the universe and will try and destroy the lives of all the Transformers, good and bad. This also has the death of two main characters and the birth of two new.
For a chance to relive your childhood this is a must have for any DVD collection. I can never tire of watching this and all the childhood memories that it brings back. I defy you not to sit back and enjoy this film. Full recommendation…
