Transformers (DVD)

Many people in their thirties will remember playing with their Transformers toys, which changed from cars and planes into robots. A film based on these toys was made in 2007.

Transformers is about a war between alien robots, the noble Autobots and the malicious Decepticons that has come to Earth. The Autobots and Decepticons are both originally from the planet of Cybertron and can transform into cars, planes and other machines thereby hiding their presence amongst the populace of Earth. The Autobots must prevent the Decepticons locating the powerful AllSpark, which is hidden on Earth. The AllSpark can create new robotic life and the Decepticons plan to create a deadly army of robots and take control of Earth. High school student, Sam Witwicky unwittingly becomes involved in the warring robots, along with fellow student, Mikaela Banes whom Sam has a crush on. An epic battle ensues as Sam and the Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, must prevent the Decepticons, led by Megatron, from using the AllSpark for their nefarious plan.

I thought that this was an exciting story that was a rollercoaster ride of action and adventure. The story is perhaps not the strongest aspect of the film, but the special effects are amazing and make for entertaining viewing. There are lots of incredible stunt scenes which are well choreographed. It is a great idea to bring the Transformers toys to the big screen.

Shia LaBeouf is good as the brave but scared teenager, Sam Witwicky who is thrust into a massive battle between the Autobots and Decepticons. I thought Megan Fox was decent as Mikaela Banes and is also very sexy in her skimpy outfits. The voices of Optimus Prime and Megatron are provided by Peter Cullen and Hugo Weaving respectively who are very authoritative in their delivery. The film also stars Jon Voight, John Turturro and Josh Duhamel.

This is a brilliant action packed film directed by Michael Bay, which has stunning special effects and stunts sequences.
