Well here I am, snowed in and spending my day in the same way as if it's Sunday all over again!!
When I was a kid I had all the toys, I was also a big fan of the animations back in the 80's and now over twenty years later Transformers are having a bit of a revival, with the second film being produced at the moment. So after seeing the Renault adverts that "borrowed" heavily from the premise of Transformers, the ability to make a car transform into a robot was finally achieved via CGI, so expectations were indeed high and knowing what calibre the CGI would actually be meant that the time was right for a film of this nature to be made.
The film itself centres on a search for an artefact that will give ultimate power to one of the two rival factions of Transformers, the Allspark holds a mysterious power for the Transformers, whoever gets this will hold the key to Transformers evolution and human life on Earth. The plot is good and acts as an introduction between the battling factions of Transformers. The factions are called Autobots who transform into vehicles such as cars and trucks and Decepticons who transform into jet planes and helicopters as well as police cars. All of which are utilised in a good and believable manner within the story as they all have their own individual assignments.
The cast of the film are interesting; it is obvious that younger actors and actresses were chosen on the terms that if this became a multi film franchise the producers would have enough time to make maybe three or four films with the same cast.
Shia LeBeouf plays Sam Witwicky,
who unwittingly buys one of the Autobots at a car dealership and manages to get sucked into a war between the Autobots and Decepticons for the battle of the Allspark. Sam doesn't realise this at the time, but his ancestors have a strong link to the Transformers.
LeBeouf plays the character of Sam well and is a likeable person in general; the character is well fleshed out and has some depth that evolves as the story progresses. What I found to be surprising was the fact that the characters is on an even level with that of the Transformers and doesn't get sidelined because there are too many characters on-screen at the same time. This also means that there is no confusion with who is doing what and the objectives are clearly defined.
Megan Fox plays Mikaela, she starts off by being a stuck up snob and a person that only hangs around with the big tough sports guys to get attention. As the film moves on her back story becomes very apparent as a focal point and you see a definite change in the character. Fox is an attractive lady and I can see why she was chosen for the role as she has a strong character presence on-screen that compliments LeBeouff quite well.
Veteran actor Jon Voight plays the Vice President. His part in the film starts off by dealing with the attacks the Decepticons initialise against American troops. At first you are not sure as to whose side he is actually on. Voight is good value for money in what ever he appears in and in this film he tends to play the part in an old school manner as he refuses to listen to anyone apart from people on his payroll. Also the late Bernie Mac appears in the film as a car dealer that sells Sam a car, this was one of his last roles before his premature death.
One of the strongest points of the film is that the story is told from a number of view points; the Military, the civilian and the Government all have their own sub-plots that tie in together in a similar way to Independence Day that brings all the loose ends to one point in the story and builds from there onwards.
As with any film of this nature the actions sequences need to be at such a level that the audience will be enthralled and entertained, yet need to believe in what they are seeing on screen is actually happening. The opening sequences in the desert and the scenes aboard Air Force One set the trend for the rest of the film and from here on you know that this is going to be an enjoyable ride. The tension in these two sequences alone gives an idea to what may or may not happen in the rest of the film as the Military Hardware used in the desert sequence shows how much force the Transformers can take and also shows what they are capable of as well.
As I said at the beginning, the CGI was going to be real star of the show and it goes without saying how impressive the fluid movement and the actual transformations of the robots actually are. The work that seems to have gone into this animation is totally mind-blowing due to the fact that you aren't too sure what is actually being animated by computer! It is seamless and that is a big compliment towards the production. It also has to be said that the updated design of both the Autobots and Decepticons. Ultimately faithful to the original designs but still modern enough to be taken as the originals. The best two examples are Optimus Prime and Megatron who transform into a truck and a jet respectively. The attention to detail really is awesome and the smoothness, as well as sounds, when they transform is satisfyingly nostalgic.
Even though the film is very enjoyable it is the dialogue that can bring the film back down to Earth with a bang. In parts it is clunky and in others the dialogue seems to flow smoother. Knowing that there is a new audience that will this film means that the Transformers have to take time out to be introduced to the audience and their back story be told in quite some detail. Although for the fan who will already know who the characters actually are the continuous repetitions of the main Transformers introducing themselves can get a bit tedious when heard three of four times.
The transformation of the Transformers into cars gives the producers a prime opportunity to get them to turn into the newest model of certain makes of cars. None more than Bumblebee who upgrades from a 10 year vehicle into a top of the line model that was suspiciously released around the same time as the film… what a surprise! This is done on a number of occasions with name badges being the last thing that appears in close up. I personally find this annoying, while others may think that it gives a level of credibility to the story.
This is a Michael Bay film and as a Director he does tend to know how to handle a high octane action film, I like the way that this film has been shot, the angles capture tension and build suspense in a positive and engaging manner that makes the film a lot more enjoyable than what it could have been . Bay has directed other big action films such as Bad Boys II, Armageddon, and Pearl Harbour. He will also be directing the follow up to Transformers called Transformers- Revenge of the Fallen.
Overall the film does let itself down in certain places, a good example is where Optimus Prime and company pays a visit to the Witwicky household, you see the whole Autobots army turn from heroes to slapstick comedians in one easy step, and although this is funny to watch it is a little out of character yet tends to balance the film up and considerably slow it down, so the film doesn't burn out before reaching the end. The film is obviously aimed at the younger generation as there are a number of characters and happenings that children will get more pleasure from as an adult would find them rather annoying.
Personally I'm looking forward to the next instalment.
