Based on the Hasbro toy line that initially captivated kids in the 1980s, director Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS finds two warring bands of shape-shifting alien robots renewing their...
more...intergalactic conflict on Earth. While the Decepticons, followers of the malevolent Megatron (voiced by Hugo Weaving), strive to take over the planet, the Autobots, led by the valiant Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen), are intent on protecting humanity. When young Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) discovers that his new car is really the Autobot Bumblebee (voiced by Mark Ryan), it sets the stage for a massive giant-robot showdown. A shining example of the Hollywood summer blockbuster at its best, TRANSFORMERS combines stunning CGI effects and thrilling action sequences with drama, humor, and a touch of romance. Featuring a large cast that includes Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Jon Voight, John Turturro, Anthony Anderson, and Rachael Taylor, the film is anchored by LaBeouf, who always displays an engaging Everyman charm, whether he’s running from colossal robots, interacting with his well-meaning parents (hilariously played by Kevin Dunn and Julie White), or pining for his gorgeous classmate (Megan Fox). While some TRANSFORMERS purists may be dismayed by certain aspects of this bold big-screen adaptation (Bumblebee is a Camaro instead of a Volkswagen), the movie balances its spectacle with an admirable amount of substance, giving it an appeal far beyond pre-teen boys and their nostalgic Autobot-loving elders.

Plot.

A long time ago, on a planet far far away, a war is waged between the Autobots (led by Optimus Prime - A small cheer is heard from the audience) and the Decepticons (commanded by Megatron) for control over the Allspark, a mystical talisman that grants unlimited power.

The Autobots have managed to get the Allspark off the planet, but Megatron follows in search of it. He eventually tracks it to Earth, but he is sent right into the Arctic Ocean, and the sheer cold forces him into a paralyzed state.

Back to the present day and Sam Witwicky has just bought his his first car. However this is no ordinary car and is actually Bumblebee, an Autobot in disguise who is to protect Sam, as he hold a piece of important information as to the whereabouts of the Allspears. But Bumblebee is not the only Transformer to arrived on Earth - in the desert of Qatar, the Decepticons attack a U.S. military base, in search of the Allspark. Earth now finds itself the battle ground for the Autobots and the Decepticons.

What did I think?
As a child I loved the transformers and so I dragged the little lady to the premier of the big screen movie as soon as it aired.

Michael Bay (The Director) does a brilliant job of translating the cartoon into the big screen. It maintains the cheesy 80s cartoon feel we all loved with the amazing action and pace of a modern day film.

The plot was indeed as expected fantastic and unrealistic, but it was all kept flowing with solid acting and the most incredible display of visual effects. Most of the acting credit has to go to Shia LaBeouf playing Sam, whom is quickly becoming a Hollywood star, he gives a great performance, with clever wit throughout.

I came out of this film grinning from ear to ear and not many films can claim to have that reaction from people. The nostalgia was part of it but the sheer brilliance of the film also contributed.

There are several moments in the movie when I sat on the edge of my seat feeling like a 8 year old all over again, and this is what made the film so magical, it transported me back to my childhood with the screen presence of one character - Optimus Prime.

Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky.
I have previously seem sam i the film Bobby. He gives a funny, sensitive and believable performance as the kid in way over his head.

Megan Fox as Mikaela Banes
Seen on TV as the oldest daughter in Hope and Faith, Megan, makes the leap onto the big screen flawlessly. A great first role, as the love interest of the main character, she has a dark past and in the end with all want them to end up together.

Josh Duhamel ... Captain Lennox.
I have only ever seen him in How to win a date with Tad Hamilton (a favourite film of the Mrs) and I have to say I was impressed with his acting in this film. A good supporting character, he makes the role memorable and heroic.

Peter Cullen ... Optimus Prime (voice)
The original voice of Optimus Prime in the cartoons, what can I say, as good as ever and the real star of the film.
