Based on the Hasbro toy line that initially captivated kids in the 1980s, director Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS finds two warring bands of shape-shifting alien robots renewing their...
more...intergalactic conflict on Earth. While the Decepticons, followers of the malevolent Megatron (voiced by Hugo Weaving), strive to take over the planet, the Autobots, led by the valiant Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen), are intent on protecting humanity. When young Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) discovers that his new car is really the Autobot Bumblebee (voiced by Mark Ryan), it sets the stage for a massive giant-robot showdown. A shining example of the Hollywood summer blockbuster at its best, TRANSFORMERS combines stunning CGI effects and thrilling action sequences with drama, humor, and a touch of romance. Featuring a large cast that includes Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Jon Voight, John Turturro, Anthony Anderson, and Rachael Taylor, the film is anchored by LaBeouf, who always displays an engaging Everyman charm, whether he’s running from colossal robots, interacting with his well-meaning parents (hilariously played by Kevin Dunn and Julie White), or pining for his gorgeous classmate (Megan Fox). While some TRANSFORMERS purists may be dismayed by certain aspects of this bold big-screen adaptation (Bumblebee is a Camaro instead of a Volkswagen), the movie balances its spectacle with an admirable amount of substance, giving it an appeal far beyond pre-teen boys and their nostalgic Autobot-loving elders.

Full review
When I first heard that after all these years there was going to be a new Transformers movie, I could not help but remember all those hours I spent with my friends playing with our Transformers (yes I still have them). Now that I have seen the file I thought that I would review this film.

My very first impressions n this film was that the Transformers really did look excellent and they are a far cry from the original cartoon characters.
The plot of the film

The film begins with Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen, the original voice of Prime, a bonus point to have the original voice) explaining the destruction of Cybertron by Megatron, and his quest to obtain the All Spark. The All Spark is a cube that can create planets and fill them with life. Megatron discovers the All Spark on Earth.
The directions to find this cube are encoded onto a pair of glasses, which are in the possession of a kid (Shia LeBeouf) who purchases a car which turns out to be the Autobot Bumblebee (who unfortunately in this film is not a VW Beetle). Bumblebee is later joined by his companions Optimus Prime, Jazz, Ironhide, and Ratchet
A Decepticon, Frenzy, disguised as a mobile phone, accompanies the group to the Hoover Dam and releases Megatron from suspended animation (he crash landed in the artic and was frozen). Locating the All Spark, he sends an alert to the other Decepticons. Megatron then escapes. The Decepticons chase the Autobots, who now possess the All Spark, into Mission City. An ensuing battle results in casualties for both sides: Optimus kills Bonecrusher, Frenzy accidentally decapitates himself, Megatron kills Jazz (yes Jazz dies), and both the Autobots and the military take down Devastator (who is not like the original Devisator who was made of the Constructacons) and Blackout. The battle ends with Sam ramming the All Spark into Megatron's chest, slaying him. This is the film in a nut shell.
A problem with this film is that as GM (General Motors, that's Vauxhall to us in the UK as Vauxhall is owned by GM) lent their support during this film the Autobots are not as they should be. Jazz was not a police car as he was meant to be but a Pontiac Solstice and unfortunately the worst part of the film is that Prime did not look like he should have, his face was wrong, the colour was wrong and also not once did he have his trailer or the good old massive gun that he is well known for carrying. These problems with Prime made the whole film seem bad, Prime was always my favourite Transformer and that is one of the toys that I still have.
I had to look up what Megatron was supposed to be, in this film he was a Cybertronian jet.
Unfortunately the director of the film (Michael Bay) did not stay true to Transformers and this is really the reasoning behind the low rating that I have given it. To me this film has fallen so far from the mark of what it could, no, should have been.
But on the other hand if you have never seen the original Transformers then you will find this to be an enjoyable action film with amazing visuals and cars that turn into robots.
