Oh look!!! Someones decided to write an opinion on an old film, not about "The Mummy 2" or one of the other latest releases, why bother you might think.

Well, just looking at my collection of video's there is always one that stands out a mile.

It has an orange spine and the words "Trainspotting" emblazened upon it.

I first saw this film at a cinema in 1996 when it was released and immeadeatley became a big fan of Irvine Welsh (the author of the book on witch the film is based)

The story basically follows the life of a heroin addict (Mark Renton , played by Ewan McGregor) living in Edinburgh and his friends who are a collection of losers, liars, psycos thieves and other junkies.

The main characters in this film are ;

Begbie - This man thrives on violence and cant seem to complete a sentance without the use of some very strong and sometimes very funny comments. He very much plays the hardman who will just about kill anyone that he even thinks is ridiculing him.
A notable scene in the film is when Begbie and his mates are all in a bar sitting on a balcony drinking and for no apparent reason Begbie launches a glass over the top.
It hits someone on the head and everything goes quiet....until..Begbie rushes down the stairs and announces that No one is leaving the pub till he finds out who threw the glass ( or words to that effect)
As you can imagine , the hard bunch of bikers stood nearby dont like the tone of Begbies voice and all hell breaks loose, much to the delight of Mr Begbie!

Diane - This is Mark Renton's girlfriend in the film , Mark mabages to stay off the Heroin for a while and fuelled by beer and Amphetamine sulphate he manages to get his sex drive back and goes looking for a woman.
Unknown to him, the girl that he manages to persuade to take him home turns out to be a 15 year old living with her mum and dad , who incidentally Mark mistakenly thinks are her flatmates.(another very funny scene)
Mark continues to see her anyway as she explains to him that the police would not be too happy with what he had been up to with her the night before!

Sick boy - He is the James Bond wannabe, Sickboy is full of charm and plays a cool and sophisticated guy . He always has a scam on the go and also uses heroin, however he is the envy of Mark because he can give it up at any time.
A memorable scene including Sickboy is where Mark and sickboy are lying in a park smoking dope and eyeing up people through the telescopic sight of an air rifle, they spot a skinhead with an air rifle and a pitbull, well, the next thing you know the pitbull is ripping into the shkinhead as it has just taken a pellet in the nether regions.

Spud - you just have to feel sorry for this fella. He is a little bit backward, maybe slow, but his heart is in the right place.
He is probably the only person that Mark can trust because he is so harmless.
A bit of an alcohlic and drug user he fuels his habit by stealing from shops, which he sees as a victimless crime as the shops make enough money anyway, but this proves to be a bit of a downfall for him as he ends up inside for it.

MARK RENTON - The film like i have said evolves around Mark.
He desparatley wants so much more from his life than to grow up as a junkie with nothing and a couple of times in the story manages to get clean.
He even moves away to London for a while to make a clean start, but eventually Sickboy and Begbie(wanted by the police for robbery) turn up at his flat.

The basics of the story would take me forever to write about, but if i could summarise the story it would be like this :

Mark tries his best to escape the life he lives, moves to London, His mates turn up, they have loads of mad adventures and Sickboy reveals a plan to make them all rich.
They have managed to aquire a large amount of Heroin which they sell to a drugs dealer, however they are pleased to accept about half of the value as they have never seen so much money .

they split the money and go off to a pub to celebrate, this ends in a fight, Begbie undoubtedley being the main cause of it all, they end up in a dodgy hotel room and while they are asleep Mark manages to sneak off with all the money, trying on his way out to get Spud to come along (but Spud is too scared of Begbie)

The last scene shows Mark renton placing Spuds share of the money in a safebox at an airport, then making his way across a bridge looking happy with himself.

I have not written about every scene in this op as it would have taken me far too long to do, but if you havent seen Trainspoting before, I would highly recommend it to you.

I love this film. Good op. If you like this you should check out shallow grave, done by the same people. jim

Superb breakdown of the entire movie, however youve probably given too much away and may have spoiled some of the fun for Trainspotting virgins.

Great opinion - it has been ages since I saw this film. It had a brilliant soundtrack too, which I still listen to regularly.
