food chain and actually putting together a collection that has more beef than filler. The meat is represented by an eclectic array of talent--everyone from underground champs Gang Starr to P Diddy, whose hookup with David Bowie's "American Dream" bites off more than it can spit out. On the plus side there's "Put It on Me", an X-rated G-funk romp from Dr Dre and DJ Quick; a fiery remake of NWA's "F*** Tha Police" (now called "Watch the Police") by C-Murder and Trick Daddy; and "Wolves", a snarling, take-no-prisoners salvo from street dawgs MOP. Hip-hop's golden child Nelly checks in with "#1", a more-rugged-than-usual shout-out to the glory of success, while Pharoahe Monch's rock-stoked "F*** You" shines a light on this oft-times overlooked wordsmith. In short, a veritable feast for ravenous rap fans that feels more like music than product. --Amy Linden

~ PLOT ~
The film is based on one single day for rookie LAPD cop Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke). He wants to begin to work on the field instead of a desk job and has asked to join the LAPD Narcotics division who is led by Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington). Jake has one day to train with them and prove himself worthy of joining the team. He rides along with Alonzo for the day to find out what he does on a typical day on the streets. Straight away they stop some teenagers for possession of cannabis and Jake does not like the way Alonzo deals with it as he is violent and threatens them with his gun. Jake is then put in a bad position when Alonzo makes him smoke the drugs or he will kick him out right at the very start, confused Jake does as he is told and goes into a high trance. Alonzo continues to show Jake the ropes taking him to a drug dealers house where Alonzo seems to know the dealer very well. Jake proves himself worthy when cruising down the street he sees a girl being attacked by two men. He immediately gets out the car and restrains the men while Alonzo just watches on. Jake gets a beating but manages to get the men both in cuffs. Pleased with his attitude and taking care of himself Alonzo shows acceptance and then does not arrest the men which totally shocks Jake and makes him angry. He gives them a choice and say- 'Do you wanna go home or jail' and then beats them to a pulp.
As they continue to go about the streets Jake is still in a state from the drugs and Alonzo continues to show how he deals with people, in a very harsh and violent manner. He doesn't seem right to Jake and he just watches on curiously. During the day they arrest a drug dealer for possession and visit the worst place in the city where we find Alonzo has a mistress (Eva Mendes) and a kid. The neighbourhood is patrolled by gang members and Jake finds it odd that they respect Alonzo and let him stroll in. When they finally go into an operation to stop another huge drug dealer Jake is horrified to see what really happens on the streets and sees that not everything is done by the books. Struggling to cope he starts to realise what Alonzo is really like and what people think of him, he thinks does he really want to be the division.
~ CAST ~
Alonzo Harris- Denzel Washington Jake Hoyt- Ethan Hawke Roger- Scott Glenn Stan Gursky- Tom Berenger Doug Rosselli- Harris Yulin Blue- Snoop Dogg Paul- Dr Dre Sara Harris- Eva Mendes Sandman's Wife- Macy Grey
I thought the cast was interesting. Obviously having film stars like Denzel and Eva made it a huge hit. As well as this the film included a lot of singers and rappers. As shown above Snoop Dogg plays a dealer which may attract his fans to the movie. I was quite surprised to see that one of the drug dealer's wives was singer Macy Grey. The film has a lot of talented stars in it which made it very successful and gave it a wide audience.
~ Director ~
Antoine Fuaqa is a well known and respected director and I enjoy many of his films. The African-Amercian director started his career in music videos and worked with many leading stars like Stevie Wonder and Toni Braxton. Some of his other films include- King Arthur, Tears of the Sun and Shooter which were all successful films. He mainly does action/ adventure films which include a lot of violence and strong language.
~ Learning about the Streets ~
Overall I think Training Day is a very well done film. The opening is pretty fast the music starts some titles appear and then we see a sun rising for a new day. I like it when a film starts quick and jumps straight into the action. Also the sun rising background becomes apparent throughout the film showing you what time of day it was. Showing the sun high in the sky and then setting later on in the film. This is a pretty good way to show the audience that all this action is in the same day. The music is slow and goes well with the action in the morning as it introduces Jake. Another thing I liked about the film was the filming techniques. There are filters used in times such as when Jake is high on drugs there is a green tint and his vision is shown in slow motion. I think it made it more interesting and so the audience can see what state Alonzo has put Jake in.
The character of Alonzo was interesting. He acts more like a gang member than a cop which is why Jake does not like the way he deals with criminals. He drives a pimped out 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Lowrider which can be highered and lowered. He uses his gun a lot to intimidate them and also threatens them a lot to get what he wants. He states at one point to Jake- 'we are cops we can do what we like'. Showing he will bend rules and does not play entirely by the book. He also wears a lot of chains and looks like a high organised gang member. He is close to the members of the Streets just for the fact he has a mistress in the most dangerous crime part of town. The gangs at first I thought showed Alonzo a welcoming respect but later I can see that they only tolerate him and do not trust him. Denzel plays the character very well and does a first class performance. There aren't many films where Denzel plays a bad guy and this was an insight on how talented he is. Jakes character played by Ethan Hawke was played well as well. I didn't really know of the actor when I watched this the first time and liked his acting.
There were a lot of realistic points to the film which I liked. A lot of researched had been done to get this aspect and I think it really paid off. Reading about the film afterward it showed that under cover cops worked with the two leading actors to give them pointers on real LAPD life and the use of the real gang neighbourhood gave it a really real life view. The film was received very well when it was released. Denzel Washington received an Academy Award for best Actor and Ethan won Best supporting actor. The film also grossed a lot of money reaching $104,876,233 world wide which was more than double than the budget for the film.
The downfall of the film is that some scenes did drag on abit, they are in the car a lot of the time at the start and I think some of the conversations could have been cutted down slightly. However there is plenty of action to over rule this and I felt interested the whole way through. It is a fierce and fast police thriller which pulls you into the reality of real life criminals. The certificate is an 18 which is right for the content included. There is a lot of violence and gore seen, a lot of drug references and sexual abuse. So I wouldn't recommend letting your young teenagers watch it.
~ SOUNDTRACK ~
Cry for freedom- Franky Perez Still DRE- Dr Dre El Cuarto Eulogio Gonzalez Siaba- Buena Vista Social Club Wow Flash- Elvis Crespo Last Resort- Papa roach WOLVES- MOP Rize- The Outlawz Letter to the President- 2Pac Pull it on me- Dr Dre Protect your head- Soldier B Ya Mama Ya Mama- Alabina Superstar- Cypress Hill Amercian Dream- P Diddy #1- Nelly
I liked the soundtrack a lot, it gave it a great atmosphere and as seen a lot of the music is done by Dre Dre is has a main part in the film.
~ DVD Features ~
- 1 disc DVD with subtitles in English, Spanish and French. - Commentary with Antoine Fuaqa - Additional Scenes - 2 Music Videos - Behind the scenes footage - Alternative ending - Filmography featuring Denzel, Ethan and Tom Berenger.
~ Extras ~
The film was marked the first movie to be able to capture real LA street gangs and they were allowed to take cameras into the Imperial Courts neighbourhood which is a public housing area for African-Amercians which is one of the most dangerous areas in LA. This gave it a realistic view of gang life and warfare. The café shown at the start of the film is used in many other movies such as- Catch Me If You Can and Gone in 60 Seconds. Bruce Willis was originally offered Alonzo- which I found interesting I don't really think it would have looked the part as well. Also Eminem was supposed to appear in the film but turned it down to film his own 8 Mile. 72% rotten tomato
~ Recommend? ~
I would recommend the film to anyone who likes this sort of genre. The crime/ action genre is my favourite so I really enjoyed the film but if you don't like violence, street gangs and bad language it is properly not for you.

The concept of Training Day is that the entire film’s events are set within a 24-hour period. This isn’t performed in a “race against the clock” way, but is the moody tale of a rookie cop, Jake and his first day’s work within the notorious L.A. narcotics division. Training Day is a modern tale of good versus bad – with plenty of blurred boundaries between the two.
Training Day lost the battle with me about thirty minutes into its considerable two-hour running time. Whilst I happily accept – and watch – films that pay care and attention to character development, with Training Day, I very quickly grew tired of the two central characters. With a lack of any substantial ...

...decided it had to be Training Day as I hadn't seen it for a while and Pip had never seen it. The film was originally released back in 2001 and was subject to quite a bit of hype and press attention. At the time I had wondered whether it was justified but as with most Denzel films I felt I couldn't go wrong either way.
The film takes on a kind of 24 approach with the events in the movie taking place in one day. The film looks impressive and has a real air to it that really entices the viewer to carry on watching. The angles and lighting really enhance the story and Antoine seems to have gone for a tad more realism and a gritty edge to the movie. The story is quite well written and although not a pulsating plot and story it has a real edge to it that ...

-Update: Tuesday 1st. I would like to thanks Entwife, for her help!!
Three weeks ago the weather was bad in the south-east of France (where i live) and so, with my wife we wanted to “test” a life size cinema, we’d never had the occasion to go to a movies-town.
Arrived in front of the cinema we didn’t know what to choose!!
A horror film…berk!! A funny film…..wasn’t looking very funny..
And suddenly I saw a poster with Denzel Washington…
I liked ... ...why not?
In fact I thought:
-It’s always the same thing with these films…the bad boys against the good ones and of course the bads will be arrested and punished……
Not very exciting…..
I always had the image of Denzel Washington embodying roles of check sammaritains, of “American model”, defending the weak and the oppressed people, but here...that isn't it...at all!! Our friend changed his look, he’s more sturdy..it’s a cop of stup.
The film ...

Advantages: The performances of the two leads and some excellent direction. Disadvantages: An ending that betrays the early convictions of the film.
Whilst Training Day failed to make a significant impact at the UK Box Office, the acclaim induced by an Oscar winning performance by Denzel Washington ensured that it’s DVD sales have been much more impressive. I figured that it was about time that I found out what all the fuss was about and recently acquired a copy for a very reasonable £12.97 from Tescos. The Film

Advantages: Easy to follow, And can progress as you get fitter Disadvantages: Not for you if you are looking for pure cardio
I recently started doing fitness dvd's in the morning before I start my day. This is one of my favorites! They do interval training to keep your heart rate up and toning moves that don't use a lot of extra equipment. Its hard work, but definitely worth it. Davina, Mark and Jackie are a great combination to keep you motivated and even smiling through the workout. You can also tackle this dvd no matter what your fitness level. The exercises can be tackled at different levels and you can so the more difficult versions as you progress. The different exercise styles also ensure that you don't get bored easily with this dvd as you can with some of the others. The dvd is also very easy to follow, even for someone as coordinately challenged as I am. ...
Advantages: Shows you the correct form for weight training, only 45 mins long Disadvantages: Music, Kirsch himself, better for someone new to exercise.
I am a big David Kirsch fan and own three of his DVDs. Initially I bought the Ultimate New York Body Plan and his Ultimate Bootcamp and both of these were extremely advanced weight training/cardio workouts that had me aching the next day.
I decided to buy Kirsch's Upper Body DVD as I assumed that this would be as advanced. I was wrong. This workout is much more for someone new to exercise and, one of its advantages is how much detail Kitsch goes into with each move. HOWEVER, the moves are not repeated very much and, unless you were quite unfit, you fail to get a very intense workout at all.
The DVD is divided into three 15 min sections-Upper body (arms, back, shoulders etc), Abs and chest and then a more advanced 15 min section with all upper body and abs.
I have a few main complaints regarding this DVD. The first is just ...
Advantages: Excellent training video with lots of tough skills. Disadvantages: Not for Beginners and terrible football Kits
I've got Simon's other DVD's and this one is in the same tradition. It is worth getting for the players tricks in the warm up and the dribbling at the end. Simon Clifford worked on the Michael Owen DVD, the Okocha DVD and play like a Brazilian. Apart from Simon's kit the DVD is excellent and no matter who you are you will learn a trick or two.
This DVD is definitely not for beginners it does not cover any of the basics but if you can already do turns like the cruyff and the Matthew's this is the perfect step up for a budding Ronaldinho.
Some of these Tricks are very tough and you will really need to practice them everyday which is why the Workout with Mr Woo is so good.
The Mr Woo work-out is excellent the things that man can do with a ball is amazing it is a variety of moves that you should practice for one minute every day ...

Denzel Washington delivers the performance of his career (New York Post, 15/11/2006)
Denzel Washington gives a hot-wired performance. The movie is first rate (Time, 15/11/2006)
DVD Description
Antoine Fuqua (THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, BAIT) turns up the intensity level with TRAINING DAY, a charged drama about police corruption in downtown Los Angeles. Ethan Hawke stars as Jake Hoyt, a well-intentioned young officer who thinks he's found his ticket to becoming a detective in the form of undercover officer Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington). Harris is a notorious figure in the streets and in the office. He also has the authority to make Jake's professional wishes come true, provided Jake is able to prove his worth on Alonzo's team. At first, Alonzo's blunt, carefree demeanour provides a shock to Jake's optimistic system, but as it becomes clear that Alonzo is dangerously out of control, Jake must decide whether or not to risk his future in the name of the law. Washington's performance as the hardened, pragmatic detective is a sight to behold. He delivers his lines with a devilish ferocity that keeps the film bubbling throughout. Hawke slips into the role of the rookie everyman with ease, providing a good contrast to Washington's fiery presence. Former video director Fuqua completes the picture by casting musicians Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Macy Gray in supporting roles.
