This film is NOT about fast cars. Anyone expecting an exciting captivating film had better choose something else. Don't get me wrong, this IS a good film. But if, like me, you just wanted a night out and see an entertaining film, then if you see this one, you won't really enjoy it. Its not that there is anything particularly wrong with it but its an unnecessarily long film and you will find yourself wanting it to end well before it does. It is a very political, dramatic "bringing home the message to the people" kind of film. But if you like that sort of thing then, hey, this is a good movie. If you are like me and like to be kept captivated, then this isn't for you.
Basically it is about the drugs cartels in America and Mexico, with the new drug crackdown supervisor (Michael Douglas) put in charge of reducing the drug related crime on the streets, especially where it affects children. A good idea. However, this new public hero is unaware that his own daughter is a drug addict and is getting herself involved in all sorts of unsavoury situations. Not good at all for a man in his position.
There are good performances from several cast members and interestingly enough, the much anticipated debut of off-screen newly weds Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones is a rather big anti-climax as the two of them NEVER meet in the film. I was particularly impressed however with the photography which changed colour a lot between U.S.A and Mexico to help the viewer figure out where the scene was taking place, without which it would be difficult to keep up with the constant switches.
I also felt that Catherine Zeta-Jones was given an awful role and did the best she could considering her character was hardly involved and very weak indeed. I actually think thought that the director seemed to be trying to make the film a very watered down political version of pulp fiction, with little stories all mixed in, drug issues, violence etc but unfortunately he failed miserably. It's still a good film, but I wouldn't watch it again myself. I was a bit disappointed.
