Ah, another Disney film to review but this time not a classic one but, a more modern Disney/Pixar release in the shape of 'Toy Story'. Released back in 1995 this film is already over ten years old but was the first Disney and Pixar combination film to be brought to our screens and was instantly loved by all due to the new animation style and modern twist on the Disney films. The film was directed by John Lasseter and co written by him as well as Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton and Joe Ranft.
The story: We follow toy Woody, a cowboy figure toy that belongs to child owner Andy. Woody and Andy's other toys including dog Slinky, Mr Potato Head, Rex the Dinosaur, the green army men and little Bo Peep, all live in Andy's room happy together until one day for Andy's birthday he receives a new, more modern toy in the form of Buzz Lightyear - a space ranger and more technical toy than Woody could ever be. Gradually Andy plays with Woody less and less much to Woody's dismay which results in him trying to get rid of Buzz altogether. However it all goes wrong when both Buzz and Woody end up lost on their own and end up in the neighbours home next door with the evil child Sid and have to try and find their way back to Andy's room. Will Woody and Buzz be able to work together to escape and make it back to the safety of Andy's room?
Cast: As this was one of the more modern films to be made by Disney a lot of the voices in the film are recognisable. There are many actors and actresses used to do the characters and these are listed below -
Woody - Tom Hanks Buzz - Tim Allen Andy - John Morris Slinky - Jim Varney Bo Peep - Annie Potts Mr Potato Head - Don Rickles Sid - Erik Von Detton Hannah - Sarah Freeman Andy's Mum - Laurie Metcalf
Obviously the two most well known actors in this film are Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. I think the producers made a really good choice in picking these two for the main roles as they work so well for the characters they are. Also the other voices work well with the role they have too which overall makes this an excellent film to watch.
Extras: My DVD does have some extras but, not many. There are three altogether which are -
The making of Toy story A preview for the next Disney/Pixar Film that was released - 'Monsters Inc' Tin Toy - Pixar animated feature
By far the best thing is the Pixar feature which is a short cartoon that is quite amusing although you can tell it was made a lot earlier or the beginnings of Pixar's work as the graphics aren't quite as good as that of Toy Story. I also thought that 'The making of Toy Story' was interesting especially when you realise how much work goes into making a full film and how long it takes too!
Overall opinion: I love Toy Story! I would never see myself getting tired of watching it and think because of how modern it is in terms of how the characters are it appeals to a much wider audience. I love the characters in the film as they have been made to be more realistic in terms of how they speak and the terms they use that everyday people will understand. At the same time it's still got that Disney feel to it by having the toys that come alive when we're not looking - something I'm sure every younger child believes happens when they are not around!
This is truly a great film and led the way for what became a great partnership between Disney and Pixar. I recommend this to anyone who wants an enjoyable, fun, animated film. The film is rated 'PG' for parental guidance. There is an official site for this film which is www.toystory.com and the film is available to buy on DVD widely across the internet and the high street starting at around the £3 mark which is an absolute bargain in my opinion for such a great film!
