Can you believe Toy Story is 9 years old this year? I remember going to watch it when it was released in the autumn of 1995 and being completely blown away by the bright colours, cute characters and the amazingly witty script.
Now you may be wondering why I now choose to write an op on this film well I'll tell you why. About a month ago my sister lent her Toy Story video to my daughter. We have watched little else for the past month! So this is just a way for me to get all my Toy Story frustration out into the world whilst my little girl sits and watches it for the thousandth time!
Toy Story is (as the name suggests) a story about a group of toys belonging to a six year old boy called Andy. In the first scene you see Andy playing with his toys but as soon as he leaves the room the toys come to life and begin to play and interact together.
We are introduced to many of the main characters at this point.
WOODY is a cowboy doll,he has a pull string and says several phrases"I've got a snake in my boot" and "Somebody poisoned the waterhole" amongst them. He is the boss,Andy's favourite toy and the one who looks after the rest. His voice will sound very familiar as it is contributed by the
very famous Tom Hanks!
SLINKY is a dog with a spring body, he is very loyal to woody and often stands up for him to the other toys.
BO-PEEP is Woody's girlfriend and the common sense voice in most cases. She has a bunch of sheep and a very kinky taste in undergarments! Flounces a plenty!
HAMM is a piggy bank, he is sarcastic and a little paranoid. His voice is provided by John Ratzenburger who is better known as Cliff Clavin from "Cheers"
MR POTATO HEAD (name explains it all really I think!) Who has got to be one of my favourite characters. He whines,he moans and he jumps to conclusions but he has some amazingly funny lines and actions throughout the movie. I love it when he puts his face on wonky and says "Hey look I'm a Picasso!" makes me chortle even after hundreds of views!
REX is a Dinosaur,a Tyrannosaurus Rex infarct but he's not very scary and is blessed with a very sensitive and nervous disposition. He worries constantly and the way he waves his little arms around when he panics always makes me think of my sister who does the same kind of action herself!
All is well and good in the room of Andy but the toys know they are moving soon and are making preparations for this when they find out Andy is having his birthday party early. This causes a small riot as they are all worried that they will be replaced by new and better toys. Woody does his best to allay these fears but finds his own nose put out of joint by the appearance of the other big character in this film BUZZ LIGHTYEAR.
Tim Allen does Buzz's voice and I recognised him as Tool-time Tim from Disney's comedy "home Improvements". Buzz is a super hero, wings, helmet, laser and karate chop action! Buzz is convinced he is the real Buzz Lightyear and acts accordingly. He soon becomes Andy's favourite toy and Woody gets jealous.
Anyhow,Woody takes a chance to get rid of Buzz for a while by trying to knock him down the back of a desk but by a freak accident sends him out of the bedroom window and into the bushes below. The other toys think he's done it on purpose and this is where the real adventure begins.
When Andy can't find Buzz he picks up Woody to take to Pizza Planet with him. Buzz Jumps onto the back of the car and confronts woody at a petrol station where they proceed to have a bit of a fight and Andy and his mum drive off without them.
What follows are the hilarious moves made to try and get our two heroes home to Andy. I don't want to go into it too much as that would make this a long read and would spoil the tale for anyone who hasn't seen this film yet; however look out for the aliens is a good piece of advise, they are the best bit part actors in a film ever! (probably!)
Do Buzz and woody get back to Andy before he leaves to move to the new house? Do the other toy's ever accept Woody's innocence? What happens when Woody and Buzz fall into the clutches of the psycho,toy-torturing kid next door? All these things can be found out in 90 minutes just by watching this Disney/pixar collaboration classic.
I love this film,I loved it then and I still love it now, even if it does occasionally wear a little thin. It is entertaining for all ages and as a U rating is suitable for all. My daughter is two and as you know happily watches this film over and over again. There is lots of humour on many levels so all us adults and children at heart will find things to laugh at too.
The storyline, though pretty predictable does roll along well and keeps your interest, you might know how things will end up but you won't guess what happens in the middle to make those things happen! A ground breaking and incredibly popular Disney film. This is already a classic and compares favourably to other Disney classics like Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.
Prices vary, A brand new video costs £13:49 at amazon and a DVD is £18:99 but you can pick up second hand video's for under a fiver at ebay and DVD's for around £10 and of course if you have the Disney channel you can catch it on there quite regularly!
Definitely recommended by both myself and my daughter Bethanny! Stay tuned for my toy story 2 review coming soon to a ciao page near you!
