A great film? How can anyone claim that a childrens animation can be a great film? Simple really, just watch this and the sequel and you shall be amazed!
I will not talk about the sequel for obvious reasons so I shall begin with this. It all begins in a boy's bedroom. A boy named Andy has his birthday and has his friends come around. When he leaves his bedroom an amazing thing occurs - his toys come to life and are wandering around, playing with each other and law and behold they talk to each other! Due to the event of Andy's birthday, some of these toys are worried because they think they will be replaced. All are afraid except 1 - Woody (with the voice of Tom Hanks). As always happens in films, the one who worries least has the most to worry about. This is because he is Andy's favourite toy (Andy's name is inscribed on the sole of his foot) and the new toy Andy is going to receive is going to take his place.
So the new toy. His name is Buzz Light Year and he believes he is the actual Mr light year, not a toy!
So as the film continues we see the evil character. His name is Sid (a boy living next door) and he does not treat his toys with respect. He likes to blow them up with explosives (how he gets his hands on such devices one can only imagine) and he also likes to sew dolls' heads with each other, as he shows later in the film.
Anyway back to the main point, Andy is moving away in a few days and the toys are worried they might be left behind. To ensure that they aren't they pair up. Woody, jealous by now, attempts to get rid of Buzz by driving the remote control car into Buzz and make him fall behind the bed. Instead he falls outside.
Andy then returns to the room and looks for his new favourite toy but can't find him. So he takes Woody to the Pizza Planet instead since he is only allowed one toy. As Andy and his mother drive past, Buzz exits from the hedges and jumps on the car.
Then they enter the Pizza Planet where Buzz enters a toy machine. Not knowing who is at the Pizza Planet, Woody too enters the toy machine in an attempt to get Buzz back and take him to Andy. You guessed it - Sid wins the pair from the machine and takes them home.
He is going to blow Buzz up when Woody begins to talk to him. All of Sid' toys too come running from everywhere and the boy is shocked with horror and runs inside.
The pair then return to the removal van and all ends well.
So my verdict of this film? A class act and one which should be watched no matter what age you are!
I love this film. Have watched it so many times with junior that I know it off by heart but still find myself asking him if he wants it on, just so I can enjoy it too. Pat.t
Sorry for the lower rating here. A bit too much of the story of the film and not enough about the other elements of the film - animation, soundtrack, character development, direction, etc. If you add this and cut down on the story, let me know and I'll be happy to re-read and re-rate.
