In 1995 the world succumbed to an amazingly appealing film which filled the hearts of children and their parents alike. This film was a unique piece of art which could be argued that this is the reason for its popularity, however I disagree. Toy Story incorporates comedy, light hearted drama, suspense and fantastic characterisation into 81 minutes.
Woody belongs to Andy, this is evident, his name is written with permanent marker on his cowboy boots which are finished with sparking spears. Woody derives from the Wild west, his mission is to defeat all the bad and support the good. He knows that Andy is his favourite, he takes him everywhere, even tucks him up in bed with him. However when Buzz light-year arrives from planet Zorg, Woody is confused, jealous and amazed. The man from the Wild wild west and the spaceman from Zorg are the main developers in this film.
If you are confused, don’t be. Woody and Buzz are Andy’s toys, whenever Andy is around they don’t move without help, they
do whatever Andy wants them to. Even if this means Woody pretending to shoot Andy’s piggy bank when trying to save Little Bo Peep from his sister’s lamp. However when Andy is not around these Toys live a life of their own. These intelligent toys all live together in the toy box; Mr and Mrs Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Etcher Sketcher, and a plastic dinosaur. These toys live their own lives in a community which even holds meetings.
The first meeting was called by Woody, it was coming up to Andy’s birthday, it was important for the toys to meet and try to discover what Andy’s new present will be. The toys dreaded this day, many of them had once been favourite; however been disgracefully dumped when Andy gets a new toy. It was time for the green plastic troops to be sent out to discover what was in store for these tedious toys.
This is when Buzz Lightyear arrives, his inability to realise he is not a real space hero causes him and the toys all sorts of problems. His main aim is to get back to planet Zorg and he stops at nothing to achieve this.
As will all films there has to be an enemy, in Toy Story this is Sid. He enjoy mutilating toys and making them live a dark and gloomy life. It is every toys nightmare to be captured by the brace wearing teenage Sid, just in case they get tied to a rocket and sent up into oblivion. Sid’s inhumanity plays an important role in this film. It balances the good with the evil.
So how is Sam involved with Andy’s toys and will Buzz ever realise he is a plastic toy and not sent from Zorg?
The graphics and animation of this film is amazing, you will even begin to feel that the toys are real and not computer animated. It is cleverly designed so that we don’t often see the human characters faces, most of the film is seen from the toys point of view. Which is a unique and cleverly incorporated in the film. Even though the toys are computer animated their individual personalities shine through and you can see how each one develops their friendships. The fantastic personalities of the toys are shone through as Woody’s voice is from none other than Tom Hanks and Buzz light-years’ voice is from Tim Allen.
The soundtrack includes some very catchy songs all written and peformed by Randy Newman. The soundtrack also includes instrumental pieces. However I wouldnt say that the soundtrack was not a strong point in the film.
Disney teamed up with Pixar to produce this amazing film, filled with comedy and one liners that will keep adults chuckling. That is the magic of this film, it is not a typical children’s Disney film. It is filled with comedy and its immense uniqueness will appeal to adults. Toy Story was the first successful computer animated film and although others have followed, Shrek, Ice Age, Antz, the first unique family film that is Toy Story will always be the one that people really remember and love.
