Toy Story was a big cinema hit in 1995 that boasted some fine computer generated imagery. The film contains the voice talents of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. The film gives you the idea that when you're not watching, your toys come alive (well it's a wild idea but not easy to prove wrong)
A six-year-old boy named Andy has a vast array of toys. His favourite toy, Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), a wooden, pull string cowboy, is the take charge room leader. But after Andy's birthday party, a new toy is around. Enter Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen), a flashy space ranger action toy with karate chop retractable wings and a 'laser beam' (a little light bulb that blinks).
The other toys all accept his arrival, but not Woody. naturally as a result a rivalry becomes apparent over which of the two toys is Andy's favourite. the only difference is, Buzz thinks he is real no matter what Woody tells him, Buzz thinks he is a real space ranger. It is becuase of their rivalry that Woody tries to 'get rid of' Buzz but all goes horribly wrong. Their rivalry finally lands them inside the home of Sid, the toy-torturing boy who lives next door. To escape Sid’s evil plans, Woody and Buzz must work together and realize they’ve got the perfect friend, in each other.
This film is quite predictable but still very entertaining to watch. It has a witty script and to have toys speaking like ordinary guys is quite amusing to watch in itself.
The colours are lavish and vibrant. The whole tone of the movie is happy and family friendly. There are some parts of mild horror but it doesn't amount to much.
The characters are well written and are very memorable. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are perfectly cast to voice the two main toys of the story. The art direction is good and director John Lasseter makes this film one of the best computer animated films made.
This was Disney and Pixar's first colabaration and has proved to be enjoyedable whether a child or an adult. "A Bugs Life" and "Monster's Inc" are other films made by the colaboration are all good follow ups but this is the one that started it all.
Loved by all ages, this film was masterfully made and should be watched by everyone. This is a film that requires you to let go of reality and indulge in a colourful, bold world where toys are secretly alive. It feels sureal after watching it for the first time, you never look at toys the same way again. A mini adventure and an original idea that was presented brilliantly.
