Toy Story 2. Better than the first?
YES!
How is that possible? No sequels are ever better than the original!
Well, it appears that once again, the Disney, along with Pixar Productions, has broken the boundaries. Again...
**~~WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?~~**
Toy Story 2 features the same gang of toys belonging to Andy. It starts in outer space as Buzz races through the atmosphere trying to save the world (after all, he IS the most famous space ranger around). His aim: to defeat Zurg - his sworn enemy. During a shoot-out with Zurg, Buzz's head gets blown off! Oh no! But it's OK, it's just a video game tha Rex has been playing. Phew.
That how the film opens and it just gets funnier and funnier. Rex is soooo funny in the film - he's a total dumbass and so sweet with it! Buzz and Woody get on now, in all Andy's stories they save Bo (Woody's fave gal) and defeat Mr. Potato Head and Ham together (but they're nice really!).
Andy's off to cowboy camp and Woody's going with him. Its five minutes before they leave that - UH OH- Woody's arm rips! Andy decides he can't take Woody and so Andy’s mum SHELVES Woody. This is a big deal because toys who get shelved don't get played with again as Woody soon discovers. High up on the shelf, he meets Wheezy (a cute lil' squeaky penguin who has lost his squeak) who everyone thought Andy's mum had taken for repair. Next thing you know, Andy's mum has taken Wheezy off the shelf and put him in the box for the YARD
SALE. Another big thing for toys - one of their worst fears is being put in a yard sale and being taken away from their fave owner!
Woody feels like he has to save the day. He leaps on the back of Andy's dog and rushes down to save Wheezy. The other toys think it's a crazy suicide attempt! "Don't do it Woody! We love yoooooou!" Screams Rex. Disaster strikes when Woody, having saved Wheezy from the 25c box, falls off and is left, abandoned on the path outside the house. A random, bratty girl comes to pick him up but she's told he's not for sale. PHEW! Everything's OK until Woody's pull-string is pulled and he yells, "There's a snake in my boot!" which grabs the attention of a big fat man who gets all excited. He STEALS Woody (evil, evil man) and takes him away.
This is where Buzz steps in. He dashes down the drainpipe and tries to catch up with the car. He nearly succeeds, but doesn't. Damnit. But he did pick up a few clues...
Next thing you know and the toys are in a conference, working out a plan of action. Etch-a-Sketch is drawing all the evidence, Buzz works on the cryptic number plate and Ham and Potato Head try and suss out the route the car took with the help of the toy cars. They're not helped by Rex who keeps knocking things over with his tail!
Woody however, has arrived in a high-rise building and has met Jessie (a cowgirl), Bullseye (a horse) and The Prospector called Stinky Pete. He finds out that he is a highly collectable toy (hence the toy-nap - Woody's worth a packet!) and has been reunited with the toys he starred with in Woody's Round-up (the TV series). Although Woody is deperate to get back to Andy, the Round-up gang have other plans (espcially Stinky Pete, look out for him!) and try to stop him leaving.
So what will happen? Will Woody stay with the Round-up gang and be sold to a museum in Japan? Will the toys survie their perilous journey? Will Rex complete the Buzz Lightyear game? And what will happen is Buzz meets up with Zurg? Hmmmmm....
**~~THE BEST SCENES~~**
Two of my favourite scenes:
When the toys cross the road... This is sooo funny. Buzz, Rex, Ham, Mr Potato Head and Slinkie attempt to cross a really busy road under traffic cones. There are a few near misses and they cause traffic chaos! Its brilliant!
In Al's Toy Barn... Having broken in to the big toy superstore. The toys need to find their way around. On hand is Tour Guide Barbie! She drives them round in a funky little jeep. They pass the other Barbies... "I'm a married Spud, I'm a married Spud" Mr. Potato Head repeats over and over again as he watches the bikini clad Hawaiian Barbies at a pool party!
**~~THE TECHNOLOGY~~**
The special effect and amazing computer generated images are better than ever. Light and shade, woodgrain, reflections and fingerprints - nothing is missed out.
Toy Story didn't have much in the way of music (basically 'You Gotta Friend in Me" by Randy Newman. the new Toy Story doesn't offer much either - a couple more tracks by Randy Newman and one high pitched whingy one by Jessie the Cowgirl.
**~~THE VOICES AND CHARACTERS~~**
You couldn't have chosen better actors to do Toy Story 2!
Woody: ~Tom Hanks ~Woody is the same hero as in the first film. He makes some pretty tough decisions in this film! Will he make the right choices?!
Buzz: ~Tim Allen ~Realises he is just a toy in this film! However, in Al's Toy Barn he meets hundreds of Buzz's that still think they're proper Galaxy protector space rangers!
Mr. Potato Head: ~Don Rickles ~He's a funny as ever in this one. Especially now he has Mrs. Potato Head! She's funny too. She comes into her own in the out-takes at the end of the film.
Ham: ~John Razenberger ~Not as distinctive as the other characters but still pretty good! Gets all embarassed when he loses his money! (He's a piggy bank!)
Slinky: ~Jim Varney ~Being a slinky comes in very useful! He gets stretched ALOT in the film! I wouldn't wanna be a slinky if I was a toy!
Jessie: ~Joan Cusack ~I don't really like Jessie, too yee-ha and screechy! But I do feel a bit sorry for her when she tells her story about the little girl leaving her and growing up.
Stinky Pete: ~Kelsey Grammar ~This is one you gotta watch out for! He's never been out of his box that is what makes him so valuable.
Tour Guide Barbie: ~Jodi Benson ~Thought I'd give her a mention as she is the voice of The Little Mermaid!
**~~EXTRA BITS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW~~**
