Toy Story was the first feature length movie to be made entirely out of computer graphics (Tron had a mixture of computer graphics and real action). Toy Story was very successful and it was only a matter of time before a Toy Story II was released.
Disney and Pixus have reformed their partnership to tell the story of Woody (a toy cowboy who magically comes to life) and a variety of other toys including the famous Buzz Lightyear. The plot introduces a few new characters that I am sure will appear in Toy Story III (including a very funny and cute horse for woody that is more like a dog than a horse!).
The plot is fairly simple. An evil toy storeowner has stolen Woody, hoping to sell the ‘Woody collection’ to a Japanese museum for a large amount of money. Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato Head and various other of Woody’s toy friends head out to save Woody. Woody, however, is looking forward to going to the museum, as he finds out that he is a famous TV personality, and realizes that he will gain immortality by being in a museum.
The plot is very straight forward, with the struggle of the rescuers and the inward struggle that Woody has to cope with .combining to make the movie and exciting and funny movie.
The graphics are very good, much the same as the original. I would have hoped for a little more spectacular graphics in Toy Story 2, but on reflection, the graphics do not take anything away from the plot or the laughs and therefore do not need to be more spectacular.
There is plenty to laugh at too for adults and children alike. The culmination of the battle between Buzz Lightyear and the evil overlord is funny with an unexpected twist. Some of the one-liners are very funny, and many visible jokes add to the humor. The scene when the toys cross the road hidden in road cones is very funny and well planned.
Overall the movie doesn’t really give us anything new, but then why change a successful formula. The plot, graphics and humor all combine well to provide a fun family movie that will be watched many times. Although not a classic, it is an excellent addition to anyone’s movie collection. The movie is suitable for all children as the plot is not overly complicated, and it teaches us a lot about caring, friendship and love.
