This collection of the first 5 episodes of Season 1 of the hit show Torchwood vary in stucture and content. The first episode "Everything Changes" is, in my opinion, a bit dodgy. It lacks the pace that the rest of the show picks up, and although it was just a starter episode to get it going, I feel it could have used a lot more oppurtunities for more pace rather than the heavy characterisation. However, it's a good episode - as long as you view it from a pre-season angle. The second episode "Day One" takes the show in a totally different direction - it's crammed full of sex and makes for a very action packed episode with plenty of rawness and the idea of the struggle of life. Let this be a warning - don't watch this with minors around! "Ghost Machine", the third episode, is exceptional and this is where the series really took off for me. The emotion, the horror of life and the fantastic chemistry of the characters come together to create an incredibly strong piece - it amplifies small situations (such as the rape and murder of a girl) and makes you realise how wrong life can be. Amazing. The fourth episode takes another twist and turn in the ever-changing Torchwood universe and takes us into Ianto's past (an excellent performance by Gareth David Lloyd makes this believable), and the team confront a cyberwoman from Doctor Who - a truly gore-packed episode! The final installment in this collection is "Small Worlds", which again shocked me and left me stunned by the amount of emotion conveyed through the performance of Lara Phillipart, a young female actress - who, as a sidenote, I have met!
The special features in this DVD are good also, no commentaries, but in depth documentaries on each individual episode which are fact-packed! Nice and cheap too.
It's in a 2-disc pack, and if you are a fan of any sci-fi or adult-themed show, I strongly reccomend you pick up this DVD to allow you to enter the tough, brutish, eye-opening, yet fantastically awesome world of Torchwood.

I love Torchwood. Good review but to improve I would add some information with regards to who plays the characters and possibly a little bit about what Torchwood is to try and entice some viewers. xx
