Top Gun was released in 1986 under the directorship of Tony Scott, who has directed Days of Thunder, Enemy of the state, Crimson Tide and Beverly Hills Cops 2. The Film itself was written by Jim Cash, who also wrote The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas and Secret of My Success.
Even though a lot of people did not like this film, it did go on to win an Oscar, Brit Award, Golden Globe and Golden Screen Award. It was also nominated for many more. Most of these awards were won due to the sound track, with the song "Take my Breath Away".
The film starts of with the two main characters flying their F-14 to encounter the MiGs that are on their way. Being a hot shot pilot, who loves to break the rules, Maverick decided that the other pilot was ok and went off to the other MiG. Unfortunalty, not staying with his wing man, allowed one MiG to lock a missile on his wing man, frightening him enough to give in his wings. This meant that there was a place for the pair to go to the elite combat school, as they had now become the best of their class they were going to Top Gun, which is really where the film really starts. During the film, we find out why Maverick loves to fly the way that he does but to me this is something that you should find out yourself in the film. To be the best pilot, Maverick does step on a few toes and does upset some of the other students at Top Gun. He also loves to do fly bys, causing the head of Air traffic control to spill coffee down him, this happens on a few occasions, nearly causing
Maverick to get thrown out of the school. The question is though does he become the best of the best?
As this is also a soppy film for some of us, Maverick does fall in love with one of his instructors, Charlie, who is a civilian, teaching the best way to fly in combat. There are a few problems on the way as Charlie doesn't want anyone to know that she has "fallen" for him.
To me the saddest part of the film is when Mavericks Plane goes into a flat spin whilst on training. Goose gets hit by the canopy, whilst bailing out of the plane and losing his life. Maverick decides that he can not carry on, as Goose was like a brother to him, as he had lost all of his family members. It is up to Viper and Charlie to set him straight and gets him flying again.
Having watched this film quite a few times, I am still finding new things in the film that I enjoy. There are some great quotes to the film, such as Viper says to the new class "Top Gun rules of engagement are written for your safety and for that of your team. They are not flexible, nor am I. Is that clear?", "The plaque for the alternates is down in the ladies room", "And if you screw up just this much, you'll be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong!"
The visual affects are great, especially seeing the MiG and the F-14 in an inverted dive together. There are great shots of fighter planes flying in the sky and in combat. The flat spin was also done very well, as was the rescue of Maverick and Goose.
Maverick.
This is another one of the many great films that Tom Cruise has played the main part in many films but it was this film that really made him what he is today. Other films that he has been in include Days of Thunder, Cocktail, Mission Impossible, Minority Report, War of the Worlds, Interview with a Vampire and Born on the Fourth of July. Maverick is one of the top pilots in America and fights to become the best of the best.
Goose
Goose is played by Anthony Edwards. Who is more known for his part in ER. He has also been in Pet Cemetery 2, The Forgotten and The Client. He plays the part of Mavericks best friend and flies with him. Goose and Maverick do everything together. Goose just wants to finish and graduate Top Gun.
Charlie
One of the few girls that are in the film. This is played by Kelly McGillis. She has also started in The Accused and Made in Heaven. Charlie is the one that Maverick falls in love with, not realizing at the time that she is one of his instructors.
Ice
Another one of those actors that looks great with no top on. Ice is played by Val Kilmer. He has started in Heat, Batman for Ever, Willow and The Missing. Ice is the best of the best and has very strong beliefs about the way that you should fly. He makes sure that Maverick knows that he doesn't like the way that he leaves his wing man.
Viper
Viper is played by Tom Skerrit. Not only has Tom been in films but also has been in a lot of TV programmes. The films include Poison Ivy, Wild Orchid 2, The rookie and Steel magnolias. The TV hits he has been in, include, Cheers, The West Wing and Law and Order. Viper is head of Top Gun and was flying with Mavericks father, when he lost his life. He is one of the ones that sort Maverick out when he loses Goose.
Jester
Michael Ironside plays Jester. Michael has stared in Fallen Angel, Children of the Corn, Free Willy and The Next karate Kid, with TV appearances in Stargate, "V" and Sea Quest. Jester is one of the main Instructors at Top Gun, who isn't sure that maverick should be there, as he is dangerous and doesn't like to keep to the rules.
Carole
Another one for the boys as Carole is played by Meg Ryan. Meg has been in The Doors, Amityville and When Harry met Sally. Carole is the wife of Goose, who has known Maverick for many years. She knows when he has really fallen in love and has the pleasure in letting Charlie know that this is what has happened with her and Maverick.
The film is 110 minutes long, to which I was glued to the screen for all of these minutes. I found that the sound track is very good, however, some of the songs are repeated too many times. This is a must watch film, as it is suited for most people. Even though there is quite a few swear words and some subjects that are not suitable for the younger child, or those who do not like the fact that there are swear words in it. My 9 year old son does love this film, as he loves to watch the planes. We do watch this film as a family, allowing me to explain that some things should not be said and why. So if you like to watch a good film with half naked men in towels, then this is the film for you.
