Top Gun is one of those movies that excellently portrays the macho, patriotic, slick and arrogant styles of the 1980s that President Ronald Reagan's tough-line policies and patriotic attitudes generated(if your a yank). While the acting is a little cheesy, the storyline a little flimsy, and the undertones rather sexist, one of this film's biggest highlights are all the slick cliches. How could any of us forget:
"I can see it's dangerous for you- but if the government trusts me, maybe you could."
"Actually I've only done this twice. First one I crashed and burned." "And the second?" "I don't know. I'll tell you tomorrow but it's looking good so far."
"I'm holding on to close. I've lost the edge."
"You don't own that plane, the taxpayers do! Son, your ego's writing checks your body can't cash!"
"I feel the need...the need...for speed!"
"You were alot like your old man. Only better...and worse."
and the best of all - "yee haar....jester's dead"
Of course, the Navy recruiting efforts and Pepsi advertising in this movie seem a little overt, but all in all, it's a good movie if you want to see all the 80s stereotypes played out. It's one of those films that earmarks a generation. I really miss the 80s when I watch this movie. I mean this film really demonizes the Russians and makes Americans look great (it makes the Evil Empire look even more Evil).
