Top gun was the blockbuster of 1986, produced by the ever brilliant Bruckheimer and Simpson combination. If you have seen a Bruckheimer/Simpson production such as "Days Of Thunder" and the more recent "Bad Boys 2" you will know what to expect. A high adrenaline, great casted, special effects extravafanza. Top gun is exactly in this mould and ahead of its time back in '86.
One of the few films that stands out in my head when asked about favourite films of all time although I wouldnt call it the best I think it has that nostalgia value. Plus which young boy didn'nt wanna be a fighter pilot after watching this film.
Basic plot....Tom Cruise plays Ace fighter pilot "Maverick" Mitchell who is following in the footsteps of his ill fated dad. Brilliant and stupid at times Maverick has to rise above his fathers bad reputation and prove to everyone he is a great pilot. Maverick gets a lucky break when his units finest pilot breaks down when he's faced with an enemy MIG. Giving Maverick the chance to attend the Elite Fighter Weapons School known to the pilots as "Top Gun". Where he has to prove his worth amongst the best in the country. With the typical love story and the "guy who fought with my dad" angle in there, it is'nt a deep plot but it's a great feel good film.
A great performance by Tom Cruise in his role as coming of age Maverick. Featuring back then an all star cast including Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards who is well known for his role in ER. The acting in this film is excellent in bits and the potrayal of all the characters is put together well.
The film is directed excellently and features some of the best aerial photography ever seen in a film. Directed by the brilliant Tony Scott who has directed many hits such has "Spy Game" and "Enemy Of The State". The film has everything a blockbuster requires and a blockbuster this film is.
The relationships that you see developing between the main actors will be ones your used to seeing. The main guy tries to lure someone who seems untouchable. He's hated by a rival who takes a liking to him by the end of the film and he has a lost friendship.
Although you may find it cheesy in places "Top Gun" will amaze you with it's combat scenes, make you laugh in places and cry in others. Top gun is one of the gems from the 80's where alot of films tried and failed with this genre. It really is one for the boys and surprisingly one for the girls. The mix of romance and action is blended together excellently. All men will wanna be Cruise and all women McGillis.
The soundtrack is excellent featuring the Oscar Winning song "Take my Breath Away" by Berlin. Full of high octane tunes that get your hearts pumping by the excellent flight scenes that are not shoved down your throat in this flight film.
Overall you will find this film excellent for a night in and will find yourself watching it over and over again. If you have seen it before this will remind you to watch it again.

I remember so clearly the first time I saw this..October 21, 1987 in the Gatwick Hilton hotel where we stayed awaiting a flight to LAX...I was only 10! but watching it as a fully fledged grown up the macho episodes and the blatant gayness make me cringe..also one realises the flight scenes are endlessly repeated and the MIGS are nothing more than Northrop USAF planes painted black for evilness value....still an icon of the 1980s!
