It is difficult to believe that the film Top Gun is 25 years old. It was made back in 1986 and is an action film about fighter pilots. Top Gun is about a reckless, but talented Naval aviator... more

Advantages Advantages Effects, Authenticity, Attention to Detail.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Strangely forced smiles, some bad acting, slightly vague plot.

Top Gun, or Top Gum as I maintain it should’ve been called due to the strange amount of forced smiles throughout, is undoubtedly for me one of the paramount (no pun intended) action movies in the last 40 years. Top Gun was directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, the latter of course most known for producing Pirates of the Caribbean and the CSI series these days. The movie was released on May 16th, 1986 – Slightly less than 6 years before I was even born, which is a tribute to the lasting power of Top Gun. One of the things I love about Top Gun is the attention ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cruise and McGillis

    Disadvantages Disadvantages slighlty cheesy

Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is a hot shot, cocky Navy Fighter Pilot who flies by the seat of his pants. Along with his flight partner "Goose", he continually finds himself in trouble for his outrageous flying. This is brought to a head, when they disobey orders and go and assist a fellow pilot who is struggling to fly their plane after an encounter with some enemy aircraft. Although his flying escapades outrage his superiors, he is sent to the "Top Gun" academy in Miramar California, where they train the best of the best. Maverick's reputation goes ahead of him, and when he arrives at the academy ... more

Advantages Advantages Very god soundtrack, acting and action.

Disadvantages Disadvantages A little slow at times

I must admit that I am not generally a Tom Cruise fan. Perhaps because of his good looks and dynamite smile, or perhaps because of his sex appeal, or perhaps because of my jealousy! Whatever it is I never managed to watch Top Gun all the way. However, after my wife watched a few Star Trek movies with me I felt obliged to sit and watch a movie or two that she wanted to see. Tom Cruise plays Maverick, a highly talented but dangerous fighter pilot in the US marines. After the number one pilot on his ship (USS Enterprise - there is a link to Star Trek) encounters a Russian Mig, the pilot loses his ... more

Advantages Advantages Some great action scenes, Looks impressive

Disadvantages Disadvantages The Story is a bit cheesy

There are a number of films in my DVD collection that I would consider to be classics. Those films that I can just put on when ever I want and enjoy no matter what kind of mood I’m in. This is one such film. Top Gun has been a favourite of mine for years and although its only a recent addition to my DVD collection, its going to be a well watched addition. It didn’t strike me as my kind of film at first but after watching it for the first time back in the early 90’s I was hooked. On a regular flight through the Persian Gulf two US pilots encounter a couple of enemy MiGs. The MiGs separate and ... more

Advantages Advantages Great fun, good flight scenes, chance to see famous actors before they were famous

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cruise is just too cheesy for words, romance doesn't work too well

Since I recently posted my review of the awful "Iron Eagle", I thought I'd post my review of the film it aspires to be, the cheesy whatsit that is TOP GUN. ----------------------------- Top Gun is a film that's getting on a bit now, but it's still good fun and you can get the DVD version really cheaply now, so get a little bit of film history and enjoy. It's not brilliant but (for a Tom Cruise film) it's pretty close. DVD Extras ---------------- The DVD is feature packed with the film and… that's it! No extras whatsoever! Deal with it. (You'd only get smarmy Tom Cruise features anyway so it's ... more
