Top Gun
Price and Availability Comes as the standard dvd, as a special edition with two discs or on many sites in a pack containing Ferris Buellers Day Off and Beverley Hills Cop. A quick glance around the obvious online retailers shows the standard dvd available from play.com (£2.99 delivered), amazon.com (£3.98 delivered) although hmv.com has the standard dvd for £13.99 it is often included in 3 for £15 / £20 deals and such. Overall due to the popularity and age of Top Gun it is available almost everywhere and represents a bargain in most cases.
Actors etc Directed with Jerry Bruckheimer (Bad Boys) and directed by Tony Scott (Days of Thunder, Man On Fire). Tom Cruise plays the main man (Maverick), Kelly McGillis (Ground Control and North) plays Charlie the love interest and also a lecturer as Top Gun. Goose, Mavericks sidekick, is played by Anthony Edwards (E.R.-TV and Thunderbirds) and Val Kilmer (Heat and Alexander) plays Iceman. Other notable appearances are Meg Ryan (City of Angels), Goose's wife, Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption) plays Merlin.
Outline
of Film The basic plot is about an up and coming fighter pilot in the US army, sign name Maverick, who maybe sometimes lets his ego do to much of the talking (or as one of the many quotes goes: to Maverick, after some playful flying "son, your ego is signing cheques your body cant cash"). After a series of events on a mission, basically the number one pilot on their carrier has a nightmare and resigns and so Maverick and Goose end up by default as the new number 1 team and as such are chosen by their captain to join the elite flying school of the US army; Top Gun. The bulk of the film takes place in this training camp with male ego's flying perhaps more ominously than the fighter planes themselves. Thrown into the story is a bit of passionate love, a tragic death and much, much more fast flying, driving and heart thumping beach volleyball. Without giving too much away the story ends with an altercation with some 'bogeys' and a return- to-save-the-world style dramatic entrance.
Sound Track One of the things that make this film so great is the soundtrack, every standout moment in the film is taken up a notch by memorable music from amongst others; Kenny Loggins, Berlin and Miami Sound Machine. The pick of these songs probably being Danger Zone (Kenny Loggins), the opening song and Take My Breath Away (Berlin), perhaps one of the most known love songs ever.
My Opinion This has been one of my favourite films since I was very young; I loved it then and I love it still. It is one of the most watch able dvd's that I own, it is one of those films you can watch without ever getting bored. Some of my favourite parts include; the tragic death (which is one of the most tear jerking moments of any film) and the bravado and banter throughout. Another memorable moment is when Maverick and Goose attempt to romance one of the Top Gun instructors, unknowingly, with a roaring rendition of 'Lost That Loving Feeling'. I think one of the main reasons why this film is such a success is the way the characters are developed and their personalities made so evident with out being overly obvious and off-putting. For example everyone loves Goose; he is the sidekick of the main man, is obvious both the catalyst and neutraliser of Mavericks mammoth ego and also is basically one of those people who is just liked by everyone. Overall the film is exciting, enthralling and even over 20 years after it was first released it still proves hugely popular with almost everyone who watches it. The length of the film is average (109 mins), which can ruin films by being too or not long enough, and does not affect the enjoyment. It is also a PG rated film so can be enjoyed by all the family and does not have the seemingly unnecessary swearing seen in many of todays film which could have an adverse affect on kids enjoyment of it.
One of the main gripes about this film is that it gramatizes war and being in the army. This may be the case, and it is a fact that applications to enrole in the US military increased sharply after the release and subsequent success of the film. However, in my opinion this is almost always the case with Hollywood films, especially big budget ones such as this, and I don't think it should seriously affect ones love of the film.
Plus points The film can be watched over and over again whilst still maintaining ones enjoyments, the action and romance are well balanced throughout, Tom Cruise plays his role to perfection (probably one of his most memorable performances), the soundtrack is excellent and a good purchase in itself. PG rated and watchable for all the family, boys and girls.
Bad points Not the most though provoking film and having been released in 1986 could be seen as a little outdated.
Recommended follow on's: The Top Gun soundtrack; is worthwile and available pretty cheap. Day's of Thunder; A film Tom Cruise starred in shortly after Top Gun. A slightly similar film about a cocky young NASCAR racing driver. Directed by Tony Scott as well. Hot Shots Part Deux; A spoof based loosely on Top Gun, sometimes a bit stupid but hilarious in parts.
Rating As this is one of my favourite films ever I am a bit biased and give Top Gun the full five out of five. I defiantly recommend this to anyone and hope this review is helpful and has at least persuaded to give it a go.
