Tom Cruise is superb as Maverick Mitchell, a daring young fighter who's out to become the best. And Kelly McGillis sizzles as the civilian instructor who teaches Maverick a few things you can't learn in a classroom.

propelled Tom Cruise to superstar status, and jetted director Tony (True Romance, 1994; Enemy of the State, 1998) Scott's career into the stratosphere. It also allowed producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer to perfect their multiplex-friendly blockbuster formula of join-the-dots plot, MTV-inspired visuals and rapid-fire action. Not least, it all but invented the modern pop soundtrack. Certainly it was the success of Simon and Garfunkel's The Graduate (1967) which inspired many song soundtracks in the pre-Star Wars (1977) decade, but since Top Gun, soundtrack pop has been gunning for the top like never before. Two singles dominate the album, Berlin's massive hit, "Take My Breath Away", and Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone", both co-written by Giorgio Moroder, who also scored Midnight Express (1978) and penned Blondie's "Call Me" from American Gigolo (1980). Most of the remainder is up-beat, energetic American AOR stadium pop-rock by bands like Cheap Trick and Loverboy, huge names at the time of the film's release. Rounding out the collection is the electro-instrumental "Top Gun Anthem" by Harold Faltermeyer, the man behind "The Heat Is On" from Simpson and Bruckheimer's previous box-office bonanza, Beverly Hills Cop (1984). All in all, a landmark soundtrack. --Gary S. Dalkin

Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is a hot shot, cocky Navy Fighter Pilot who flies by the seat of his pants. Along with his flight partner "Goose", he continually finds himself in trouble for his outrageous flying. This is brought to a head, when they disobey orders and go and assist a fellow pilot who is struggling to fly their plane after an encounter with some enemy aircraft.
Although his flying escapades outrage his superiors, he is sent to the "Top Gun" academy in Miramar California, where they train the best of the best. Maverick's reputation goes ahead of him, and when he arrives at the academy, he receives a hostile welcome from other pilots who think he is a loose canon. As the competition to be the best pilot at the academy heats up, the rivalry between Maverick and another pilot, Iceman, reaches boiling point, both in the air and on the ground.
Whilst at the academy he meets Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood, a civilian contractor who helps to teach the pilots. Although she finds Maverick a cocky, arrogant pilot there is a spark between them and soon they start to fall for each other.
Whilst, on a training exercise, Maverick, is involved in an accident and looses his nerve. Will Maverick be able to finish the pilot's course? Will he keep the Girl? You will have to watch it too find out.
So Top Gun, one of the most iconic movies of the 80s and the one that Tom Cruise will always be remembered for. The story centers on the character of Maverick as he attempts to become the best pilot, as well as his romance with one of his instructors. Too be honest, it's not the most substantial of plots, but there is enough little sub plots to pad it out into a reasonable good film. Along with this, there is plenty of action sequences and outrageous machismo. So with all of this, Top Gun is a satisfying film for the majority of the audience, not wanting to sound sexist or stereotypical, but there is the romance story and Tom Cruise's good looks to satisfy the females and then there is the action and Kelly McGillis to satisfy the males. In general, Top Gun is a good film, which will remain a favourite of many who remember seeing it back in the 80s.
With that in mind, has Top Gun, after 20 years, become dated? Too be honest No, it does seem a little bit cheesy compared to many of the recent action films, but it still has enough in there to satisfy new audiences. I may be a bit biased, as I remember seeing this back in the 80s and it has always stayed with me since.
In the lead role of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is Tom Cruise (The Color of Money) and to be fair he pulls off the character with ease. Although he comes over as arrogant and cocky, he is extremely likeable as he battles with his inner demons. In my opinion, this film launched Cruise into mega stardom, but could have also been the death of his career, as it could have easily lead him to be typecast. Opposite Cruise as his love interest is Kelly McGillis (Witness) although is not spectacular provides an adequate performance, and allows Cruise to shine their joint scenes. Making up the cast you have Anthony Edwards (ER) as Goose, Val Kilmer (The Saint) as Iceman and Tom Skerritt (Steel Magnolias) as Viper, along with a brief appearances from Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins. All in all, the entire cast put in good performances, although the only one who will be really remembered for this film is Tom Cruise.
The film is directed by Tony Scott (True Romance, Domino) and I feel this was the film which established him as a good director of big budget movies. Through his direction, he has created a very watch able movie, which although is not the most thought provoking it is still very enjoyable. He has created a good balance of action and drama which will appeal to most viewers. The soundtrack to the movie is also one of the most memorable with songs such as "Danger Zone", "Top Gun Anthem" and the unmissable Maverick's and Goose's version of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", which created one of the funniest chat up moves in history.= The Cast =======Tom Cruise .... Disc1
Audio Commentary - This audio commentary is not just the director but also the producer, co-writer and several technical authorities which were used in creating the film. You learn a lot about how the film was made and how realistic, or more to the point unrealistic it was.
TV Spot - here are 7 adverts made for the film
Music videos - There are 4 music videos which feature the main songs in the film, Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone", Berlin's "Take My Breath Away", Loverboy's "Heaven In Your Eyes", and the "Top Gun Anthem" by Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens
Disc 2
Danger Zone: The Making of Top Gun - WOW, this is a 6 part documentary on, as you guessed it 'The Making of Top Gun'. Why I say WOW, is that if you watch them as one long documentary it runs for nearly 2 and a half hours. It has interviews with everyone and anyone who contributed to making the film, from cast, crew, technical advisors, musicians, etc etc. This is the most comprehensive making of documentary I have every watched and answers every question you could have imagined of.
Multi-angled Storyboards - this allows you to compare 2 of the key scenes against the original story boards, plus there is an optional commentary from the director explaining the scenes.
Vintage behind the scenes featurette - is a typical view of actors and cast as they get ready to shoot scenes, and at about 5 minutes, is quite enjoyable
Vintage survival training - is a feature which shows the cast going through technical training for the plane scenes, again at only 7 minutes is quite enjoyable.
Vintage Tom Cruise Interview - is a 6 minute interview with Cruise where he discusses his part in the film and the experience he got from doing it.
Production Photography - is what you expect, several photos from the film, both in front off and behind the cameras.
The Making Off documentary really blows you away and makes the other features a bit sub standard, when in fact they are what you get on most DVDs.======================= The Message & Christian View Point =============================Although I love Top Gun as a film, what I don't like is the way that it over romanticizes war. It makes it look like that being in the Forces is all about being a hot shot and pulling chicks, it doesn't really show the real world. Even the technical experts who helped with the film, say that it doesn't portray a realistic look at life in the forces.========== Conclusion & Rating ================So, with Top Gun hitting it's 20th anniversary, has it still got the same appeal as it had back in 1986. In my eyes, yes. It may seem to be cheesier than what I remembered, and compared to modern action movies, it looks quite lame. But for those who grew up with Top Gun, it is still a pleasure to watch it, a reminder of growing up in the fashionable 80s and a reminder why it was so successful. You know when a film reaches iconic status, because other films make a parody of it, in this case just look at Hot Shots.
This Special Edition 2 disc version is available on Amazon for £7.97, which is a great price for this film along with its very comprehensive bonus material
Trivia ======
The love scene between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis was filmed after initial test screenings. Moviegoers complained that there was no love scene, so the company obliged. McGillis, however, had already dyed her hair darker for her next film. This is why the scene is tinted blue. - courtesy of IMDB
A script for "Top Gun 2" was completed shortly after the release of the film, but it broke down in pre-production because 1) the military's technology had become updated and they didn't want camera crew anywhere near their new aircraft and 2) Cruise did not want a sequel and finally agreed to star in one for a very high amount that was deemed "unaffordable." The script followed the further adventures of Maverick as an instructer at the Top Gun academy, the twist being a cocky female reminiscent of himself joining the team. - courtesy of IMDB

Top Gun was the blockbuster hit of 1986 and is still extremely popular today. It stars Tom Cruise in its lead role as and is one of those films that everyone is just presumed to have seen and if you tell people you haven't they don't believe you. Now I'm not one of those people, as I've seen Top Gun numerous times and still really enjoy it but if you are one of those people then why? It's a fantastic film that you really should see. Advantages: Full of action and a little bit of romance Disadvantages: None
...it. Top Gun opened in America on May 16th 1986. It became the highest grossing film of the year taking $176m in the US and $344m worldwide. Coinsidently sales of aviator sunglasses rose by 40% and the number of people signing up for recruitment in the Navy also increased.
So what is it about the film that makes so many people love it or want to become a pilot?
The storyline is fairly simple....as I once heard an American comedian say....
Tom Cruise ... ...(Anthony Edwards) find themselves at Top Gun - the Navy's elite training ground. Here they are trained with the best of the best, of the rest of the Navy's elite fighter pilots. Who just happens to include Iceman (Val Kilmer). Neddless to say it all gets very competitive.
At the same time there's a little bit of romance when Marverick falls for Charlie (Kelly McGillis) and in the end gets his girl.
So the story may be a little bit thin and slightly ...

Maverick (Tom Cruise) is a reckless F-14 pilot who flies by instinct and breaks all of the rules. While attending the Navy's elite air combat training academy, affectionately known as 'Top Gun', Maverick romances the civilian astrophysics instructor (Kelly McGillis) and competes with crackerjack pilot Ice (Val Kilmer) for top honours. He is the quintessential rebel, upsetting senior officers with his antics and risk-taking while simultaneously amazing them with his skill. In the end, Maverick overcomes a tragic loss and his need to stand out in the crowd and proves that he can shine as part of a team. Anthony Edwards stars as Maverick's best friend and co-pilot, Goose, and Meg Ryan first garnered attention as Goose's wife, Carole. Superb state-of-the-art aerial photography makes TOP GUN, directed by Tony Scott, one of the most exciting and entertaining films of its genre. This top grossing movie of 1986 is allegedly based on a Navy fighter pilot program at the Miramar Naval Base in San Diego, California, and was filmed on location at the base.
