"Bond...James Bond." This phrase has been intoxicating cinema audiences, and Indeed television audiences, since the release of Dr. No in 1962. James Bond films are formula films, each one different with the same basic plot, probably the reason for it's success. Ingredients for a bond movie; fast cars, big guns, evil geniuses and have, of course, 'the Bond Women'.
In the earlier films, women were always damsels in distress, ... ...never really played important roles, usually just a love interest. Now, in the 21st century, things are beginning to look up. Women are receiving bigger roles more and more, but there are still the sexist jokes that make Bond, well Bond. Jokes such as what Bond says to a parking attendant watching his car (which has a female voice), "Don't let her push you around."

James Bond films are formula films, each one different with the same basic plot, probably the reason for it's success. Ingredients for a bond movie; fast cars, big guns, evil geniuses and have, of course, 'the Bond Women'.
In the earlier films, women were always damsels in distress, can’t protect themselves so Bond has to save them. They never really played important roles, usually just a love interest. Now, in the 21st century, things are beginning to look up. Women are receiving bigger roles more and more, but there are still the sexist jokes that make Bond, well Bond. Jokes such as what Bond says to a parking attendant watching his car (which has a female voice), "Don't let her push you around."
In the 'Tomorrow Never Dies', one of the latest films, right away we see the sexist message. M, even though she is important, as soon as something goes wrong ranks are pulled and M is ignored. At the beginning of the film Bond is on a covert operation to stop a group of arms dealers. When it looks as if the mission will fail the admiral launches a missile before they realise the presence of nuclear torpedoes in the area. Bond does his spy thing, but sufficed to say he saves the day. Point being that when the admiral messed up M took charge. When he referres to balls M says, "I don't think with them all the time". M has been in all the Bond films, although has only been a woman in the latest ones showing that it's different these days. She has become more and more a mother figure to Bond, as their relationship has grown over the films. A powerful women M is very serious about her job but can tolerate Bonds playful attitude. A lot of the time we see close-ups or low angles to make her seem powerful. It usually switches to her face when something goes wrong, to see her expression. Judi Dench plays the role very well. One thing that makes her stand out is her choice of clothing. All the agents and other people that work at HQ dress very dark, M opts for lighter clothes.
Next we see Moneypenny (played by Samantha Bond). Although she isn't a greatly important to the plot, she does have an important job. Moneypenny is an interesting character, apart from her name; she does not fit the stereotypical female role. If Bond tries to hit on her she'll give it right back with one of her sexual innuendoes. For example, she makes reference to Bond sleeping with his language instructor, "You always were a cunning linguist".
Paris (Terri Hatchet) is a former lover of Bond's, and is now wife to Carver (Villain). She does not play any vital role she is only used as bate (to lure Bond) and for sex. Mostly we see Paris from Bond's perspective (Although there is a behind view in the sex scene). The shot's are high angle, either to make Bond look more important or simply because he's taller. At first she punches Bond and orders a drink emphasising on her new title of Mrs. Carver. Later she says to Bond, "I've made my bed and you don't sleep in it anymore," Although she sleeps with him anyway. Carver has her killed when he suspects she and Bond have been together, "I think we should get my wife an appointment with the doctor." So ultimately she is used as bait to lure Bond.
Wai Ling plays a vital role in the movie. She is also a spy. Not quite as experienced as Bond though, as we see in one of the scenes. When Bond infiltrates one of Carvers posts, he is very cool, calculating and efficient, using hi-tech gadgets to avoid arousing suspicion, whereas Wai Ling rushes in the front door tripping the alarm. Making Bond seem the better spy. From the start there is an immediate attraction between the two (common in Bond films), but their loyalty to their work is primary. In one scene we see Wai Ling having hand-to-hand combat with six men, but Bond has to rush in at the last minute and save her. This is the old damsel in distress scenario. Bond does however rely on her Hong Kong knowledge, and has to take a back seat when trying to access computer terminals.
In conclusion all the characters, with the exception of his language instructor (who has no lines, just sex), are in their own way important, but the Bond flare is still there. I enjoyed the film and feel I now analyse things more carefully not taking them for granted. In a way Bond is a stereotypical spy, but then again it was Bond that started the trend.
Advantages: good special effects Disadvantages: it is another Bond movie!
Tomorrow Never Dies is generally a good movie, but it is too repetitive of the previous Bond movies.
There is always the same formula to the Bond movies, and this is why Tomorrow Never Dies will be the last Bond movie that I will purposely watch. They are ok as background movies when you have visitors to your house, but as for going to the cinema to watch them, well I don’t!
Here is the formula to watch out for in Bond movies. I have used ... ...can be easily applied to Tomorrow Never Dies.
The hero (a sphere of action- the good guy) in this narrative is James Bond, as the narrative (story) follows him throughout the movie. Bond does battle with a media mogul; Elliot Carver, who is the villain (another sphere of action- the bad guy), a binary opposite of the hero and has what the hero wants, the princess (what our hero is fighting for).
It could be argued that Elliot Carver is based on ...

Advantages: It's a good action flick by most standards Disadvantages: but it lacks the sparkle of most Bond films
...meal out of the mediocre, Tomorrow Never Dies seems to subscribe to the theory that more can most definetly be less.
It is hard to put a finger on exactly what is wrong with the film. Certainly the players all perform more than adequatley, with only Jonathon Pryce overdoing it as the Bond villain Elliot Carver. Interestingly, it is his over enthusiasm for the role that stands out as one of the more watchable elements of the movie – “exactly ... ...was one question this reviewer was frequently asking.
And so to the plot. A British warship carrying nuclear warheads is mysteriously sunk near Chinese waters. The Chinese claim the vessel is in fact in their territory, but the GPS signal on board indicates they are some 20 miles from Chinese territory. James Bond is called in to investigate a possible link between the sinking of the H.M.S. Devonshire, and mega-millionaire media baron, Elliot Carver. ...

Advantages: That car chase Disadvantages: not the best bond movie
I don't like Bond movies. I never really have. I'm not one of these "Roger Moore was much better than Timothy Dalton". I don't particularly care and haven't seen most the movies. I personally think they show their age quite quickly.
But I am a fan of the Pierce films. I like the new Bonds. I believe that Goldeneye is one of the best films ever made. It's certainly the best Bond film ever made to date. Although obviously I can't be sure having not ... ...film was Pierce Brosnan's second appearance as James Bond after Goldeneye. A secret CIA decoder for their GPS satellites is stolen at an arms deal on the border of Russia. Using this device, Elliot Carver sends a British navy ship off course into Chinese territory to provoke a fight between the Chinese and British. They sink the ship and destroy the Chinese fighter planes. The whole story is reported in Carvers newspaper the next day as he launches ...

Bond is back in Tomorrow never Dies. The best Bond since Connery, Pierce Brosnan plays the suave secret agent. The stunts are wild, the women are fast and the baddy is baddy-ish. A British media mogul is bent on holding the world to ransom by creating his own amazing headlines for his news network to broadcast. Bond must infiltrate this organisation using his influence with the media mogul’s wife known from a past affair. BMW is the new Bond motor ...

Advantages: Good storyline, action sequences, acting Disadvantages: Main villain is a bit unthreatening (although Stamper more than makes up for this)
This will never go down as a James Bond classic, but in my opinion, it is easily one of the best. Pierce Brosnan confirmed his place after two films as the second best Bond behind Sean Connery.
This film is good, because it has pace, suspense, a good and even plausible storyline, and most importantly, great action.
The storyline is, media mogul Elliot Carver (Jonathan Price) tries to start a war between Britain and China by sinking a British ship ... ...use of his satellites.
However, M (Judi Dench) trying to avoid the world war that the Admiral (Geoffrey Palmer) seems set on having, knows about this, and sends James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) to Hamburg to a party. At this party he meets an old girlfriend Paris Carver (Teri Hatcher) now married to the media mogul, in an interesting twist, and then proceeds to wreck the party.
There is then a fantastic car chase as he has a car which is remote controlled, ...

Advantages: Great modern work all round Disadvantages: Ever so slightly lacks Cubby Broccoli's magic
TomorrowNeverDies (1997) is the 18th Bond film, and the second starring Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. Brosnan's first outing as Bond in Goldeneye in 1995 was a great success following a 6 year gap since Timothy Dalton's Bond in Licence to Kill in1989. Goldeneye bridged the gap following the end of the Cold War and the reduction of Soviet villains for Bond, and paved the way for a more modern Bond dealing with more topical issues, as we see here in TomorrowNeverDies.
The Plot
Despite the efforts of James Bond to prevent him, American terrorist Henry Gupta acquires a GPS encoder used by British forces to sell to media giant Elliot Carver, who plans to use the encoder to start a war between China and the Unted Kingdom. Unaware of this, but suspicious of Carver, Bond is sent undercover to find out what is going on, and to rpevent ...
Advantages: Loads of Bond moments Disadvantages: Bond does an Arnie
Hello and welcome to my review of Pierce Brosnan?s second appearance of Bond in TomorrowNeverDies. The version I am reviewing is the two-disc Ultimate Edition.
As you can imagine, this was only the second Bond film to be released since Licence to Kill back in 1989 and the hype around the film was justifiably huge. Brosnan had cemented his role as 007 and audiences welcomed him back to the role with a great hunger for another film to be released. The film was release in the UK on December 12th 1997, with the Odeon Leicester Square holding the premier three days previously. A film had to be released in 1997 as that year was the 35th anniversary of Dr No.
---The Plot---
Two years after the massively successful GoldenEye, Brosnan returned for a second time as James Bond. This time things were different to the previous production ...
Advantages: Great fun at its best Disadvantages: Becomes a bit mechanical after a while
TomorrowNeverDies was first released in 1997 and is the eighteenth James Bond film and the second to feature Pierce Brosnan in the iconic role. The plot of the film revolves around a media mogul called Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) attempting to start a new world conflict to boost his television empire. Carver wants exclusive broadcast rights to China and believes a war will be the best way to eliminate the obstinate Chinese politicians who are reluctant to allow the Carver Media Group access to China. With the aid of a (very sci-fi) 'stealth ship' Carver's henchman Stamper (Götz Otto) sinks a British frigate (look fast for Gerard Butler as one of the crew) in the South China sea, murders the sailors, steals some missiles and shoots down a Chinese jet. Both the British and Chinese are manipulated to believe a hostile act has been ...
