Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) with his brothers Virgil (Sam Elliott) and Morgan (Bill Paxton) set off to Tombstone,a small mining town, with the intenction of leaving the law behind and settling down. There Wyatt meats up with his old freind Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer),who finds the underworld of Tombstone a releif from his tuberculosis. Before long there heaven of no law and profiting from the gambling in Tombstone they run into a gang of ruthless men wearing red sashes known as The Cowboys. Led by "Curly Bill" Brocious (Powers Boothe). No matter how much The Cowboys try to entise Wyatt he is determind that he is no longer interested in a life of law anymore, even when Morgan thinks of a powerfull arguement as to why they should. The trouble first starts when a face-to-face meeting between Doc and the psychopathic Johnny Ringo (Michael Biehn),they clearly dont like each other. The first to put on a badge is Vergil and he makes Tombstone a no gun zone. Soon there is a showdown between The Cowboys and Vergil soon have their first shoot out, with Morgan for back up. Three Cowboys are killed including Billy (Thomas Haden Church),Ike Clanton's (Stephen Lang) younger brother. When Virgil, shot in the arm,and Morgan is killed Wyatt has no option but to wear the badge, with the suffering Doc as backup.
In my opinion this is the best western of my generation. The performances are outstanding including the small parts played by Charlton Heston,Jason Priestley,Billy Zane,Billy Bob Thornton, and Robert Mitchum the narrator. Its a moving story telling the tale of no matter how hard you try to hide from trouble,if its in your blood, trouble will find you. The story is dark in places and a ray of sunshine in others, namely when Wyatt is enticed by Josephine Marcus (Dana Delany). If you like your westerns or are just a fan of the stars in this movie you will enjoy this film and want to watch it over and over again.
