Advantages: Looks fantastic, acting is great, interesting story Disadvantages: Slightly predictable towards the end
For such a famous director, Sam Mendes has made very few films. Only two in fact; the multi-Oscar winning American Beauty and this 2002 follow-up, RoadToPerdition. Although follow-up isn't really the right term, as this is completely different. I was surprised to find that this did not win any major Oscars, although it was nominated for about six, because it really is a brilliant film. I was also surprised that for such a great film, it was not advertised very well; I didn't really know anything about this film before I saw it, and I bet lots of people don't know about it at all, which is a shame.
The story tells of a hit man for the Irish mafia, Mike Sullivan (played by TomHanks). He and his two sons have a close relationship with the godfather John Rooney (played by Paul Newman). Sullivan keeps his job a secret from his ...
Advantages: Great feel good film, superb acting, great music, well written Disadvantages: A few loop-holes, but nothing too major
The 1996 film 'ThatThingYouDo' is one of my all time favourite feel-good flicks. Set in the glory days of rock and roll, the film opens with Guy Patterson, working in the Patterson appliance store. Guy doesn't know anything about being a sales person. He doesn't want to be a sales person. But because he's a Patterson, he works at Patterson's.
Guy manages to be in the right place at the right time, and is asked to take the place of Chad, the drummer from new group 'The Oneders', who managed to perform one post leapfrog too many and break his arm. Don't ask. You may need to see the film to understand!
'The Oneders' don't dream of taking their little band any further than winning one-hundred dollars in a competition. However, Guy becomes a man possessed and ups the tempo four-fold on their ballad; 'ThatThingYou ...
Advantages: Amusing, knockabout fun Disadvantages: Youve seen it all before.. and it becomes a little repetitive by the end
BachelorParty (1984)
105 Minutes:
Dir: Neal Israel
Starring: TomHanks, Tawny Kitaen, Adrian Zmed, Robert Prescott
The 80s TomHanks was a totally different animal to the one of today. The award laden roles of the last couple of decades seem suited for a totally different person to the frothy, freewheeling Hanks of back in the day. BachelorParty was the start of a string of box office hits that established Hanks as the young comedic leading man.. the Sean William Scott of his day.
If you?ve seen both films, you cannot fail to miss the parallels between BachelorParty and Animal House that preceded it in 1978. The latter set the standards by which other films of the genre are put together and BachelorParty follows the templates pretty faithfully. All the stereotypes are there, the charmer, the gratification fiend ...
Five features. 'Bachelor Party', 'Big', 'The Man With One Red Shoe', 'The Road To Perdition', and 'That Thing You Do' a cautionary pop fable following the meteoritic rise of 'The Wonders', a fictitious foursome during the early days of pop-rock fandom. When jazz drummer Guy Patterson fills in for a session with a friend's band, a hit single is born and the smalltown boys find themselves riding a rollercoaster of success, guided by the opportunistic hand of a smooth-talking record label agent. Fun, cheerful, and innocent. Hanks' directorial debut. Academy Award Nominations: Best Original Song for 'That Thing You Do'.
