If there is one film score that stands as the quintessential example of the chamber model, ... more
that score would be Elmer Bernstein's To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Based on the Harper Lee book, Robert Mulligan's film tells the story of Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck), an Alabama lawyer who accepts a racially sensitive case while raising his motherless children in an economically impoverished town during the 1930s. One of the most influential scores ever written, Bernstein's music is the embodiment of a child's sensibility. The evocative main theme, introduced by solo flute, is arguably the most rapturous melody heard on any American film soundtrack. Composed for small ensembles of strings, winds, brass, and piano, the remainder of the score is appropriately imaginative, warm, curious, buoyant, and impressionistic. Bernstein's music defends the children as they approach the horizon of maturity. When Finch's daughter, Scout (Mary Badham), offers a reminiscence from an adult perspective during the closing frames, the nostalgic music adds resonance to her words and invites the listener to draw upon his or her own memories of innocence and youth. This definitive re-recording offers the complete score sequenced in chronological order. An essential purchase. --Kevin Mulhall

a black man accused of rape in this film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The way in which it captures a time, a place, and above all, a mood, makes this film a masterpiece. The setting is a dusty Southern town during the Depression. A white woman accuses a black man of rape. Though he is obviously innocent, the outcome of his trial is such a foregone conclusion that no lawyer will step forward to defend him - except Peck, the town's most distinguished citizen. His compassionate defence costs him many friendships but earns him the respect and admiration of his two motherless children.

Advantages: SUPERB NOVEL TO READ Disadvantages: CAN BE A LITTLE CONFUSING
a girly mag or gossip mag in front of me and I'll pick it up without hesitating! This is why this novel surprised me very much. I definitely think there is a weak side to my lack of reading as I currently study English and enjoy it so I would truthfully base my lack of novel reading on laziness and a busy lifestyle. This novel helped me realise that I really do enjoy the books - or at least the exceptionally good ones like so.

Advantages: Excellent and believable storyline Disadvantages: none
first read this book, (not listened to on audio) in my GCSE English Literature class and honestly thought I would not enjoy it. Set in the 1930's rendering life in the great depression, i thought it would be a depressing story to read, regardless of my teachers opinion that it was, and still is the best book she has ever read.
However, beginning to read the book, i became hooked and very interested in the storyline. The novel covered many important topics and mainly focused on the division of the white and black communities in a quiet Alabama town. The story was written and told through the eyes of a woman looking back on her childhood with her brother in this community. It focused on the lives of community members and possibly the main storyline, the trial against a black man accused of rape by a young woman in a less than respected ...

DVD Description
Robert Mulligan's classic adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, set in the racially charged atmosphere of Macon County, Alabama in the 1930s, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is a poignant coming-of-age story. Winner of four Academy Awards including Best Screenplay (written by Horton Foote), and Best Actor (Gregory Peck), TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is a timeless film packed with beautiful scenes and meaningful life lessons. The story is told from the vantage point of a young girl nicknamed Scout (Mary Badham) whose widowed white father Atticus Finch (Peck), an attorney, decides on principle to defend a black man (Brock Peters) charged with raping a poor white woman. But the bigoted townspeople would rather lynch the accused than try him, and they make life hellish for the lawyer, his daughter, and his son Jem (Philip Alford). While their father is in the throes of the trial, his bright, inquisitive children learn a hard and unforgettable lesson in justice, morality, and prejudice, part of which requires overcoming an unfounded fear of their mysterious neighbour Boo Radley (Robert Duvall).
