This is another film by the great film master Alfred Hitchcock starring the great film actor Cary Grant. The film invovles a jewel thief lurking on the French Riveria, shifting blame to retired burglar John Robie, aka The Cat(Grant).
Robie heads to Cote D'Azur, where he is greeted ruthlessly by his comrades. They were pardoned for their heroism in the Resistance, but now fear arrest due to this new crime wave. Robie claims innocence and vows to find who's copying his distinctive style. With the help of detective H.H. Hughson(John Williams), Robie launches his investigation by keeping tabs on the wealthy vacationers in the Riveria.
One person, Mrs. Jessie Stevens(Jessie Royce Landis) is a wealthy woman who is very outspoken unlike her daughter Frances(Grace Kelly), who is very quiet. It seems Frances is attracted to Robie because he is a thief. Somehow they make love during the fireworks display. Jesse stubs a cigarette in an expensive plate of eggs. Robie meets another woman, Danielle Foussard(Brigette Auber) who is falsely accused of the crime.
But eventually Robie caputures the real jewel thief and is free of the crime and gets the girl. It seems To Catch A Thief is a very appealing film to watch over and over again. The Riveria location photography is magnificent shot on film.
The film seems to be one of Hitchcock's finest and somewhat humorous films ever made. This classic film is a far cry from the familiar, horrifying thrillers of Hitchcock. I do recommend watching To Catch A Thief on video or DVD.
