Intro>>>

When Titanic first came out in 1998 I was rather lukewarm to the hype surrounding the film, so didn't get around to watching it until it came out on DVD. Once I watched it my feelings changed completely, and I fell in love with the film and the romance between the two leads. I really am an old romantic at heart. A lot of people are still angry about this Titanic film, claiming that a great tragedy has been turned into a soppy soap opera, with the epic disaster being sidetracked in favour of mushy romance. On the whole though the film is universally loved, this particularly true when looking at the box office figures; Titanic has so far taken a staggering £1.8 billion pounds in the eight years since it has been released, making it the highest grossing film of all time. There have been numerous DVD releases of Titanic, but this four disc special edition is the most exhaustive, containing stacks of extras including an alternative ending.

The Titanic sank back in 1912, and nearly all of us are familiar with the story of it hitting an iceberg and sinking, even though it was billed as the 'Unsinkable ship'. James Cameron puts a different twist on events in this 1998 release of the film; of course the disaster is very much the same, but director Cameron instead decides to focus on two particular people, and their relationship on the doomed liner. For me this is a much better idea, because it allows the audience to get more involved with the characters, gaining an emotional attachment with them as the film progresses. Cameron's previous films have included Alien and Terminator, so this more romantic type of film was definately something new to him. Production of this film started way back in the early 1990s, and was released later then expected and well over budget, at over £200 million. Even with the late release and lukewarm reviews, Titanic won 11 Oscars including best picture and best special effects.

The Plot>>>

The film starts in the present day, where a group of explorers are scouring the wreakage of Titanic, looking for the "Heart of the Ocean" gem which is worth millions. Instead they find a drawing of a young woman wearing the gem, who turns out to be Rose, a passenger on the doomed ship. Rose (who is now over 100) is invited onto the crew's ship to tell her story about her time on the Titanic.

We then go back in time to 1912, as the Titanic prepares to leave the Southampton docks for New York on its maiden voyage. We are introduced to the two main leads Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) in quick succession. Rose is a rich upper class young woman who's having a troubled relationship with her fiance Cal (Billy Zane) while Jack is a broke artist who wins his place on the ship through a bet. After a chance meeting on the deck of the ship Rose and Jack soon fall in love, despite their class divide and very different backgrounds. Both of them are looking for an escape; Jack wants to make it big in New York while Rose wants something that doesn't involve endless tea parties and mindless chatter. While Jack and Rose are consumating their relationship the Titanic is hit by the fateful iceberg, and the two young lovers have to find a way off the ship before it sinks.

My View>>>

Although the script is rather poor this for me is a gripping and emotional film, as we truly care about the lead characters and what happens to them while on the ship. The characterisation from Cameron is really good, particularly on the troubled Rose who's loveless relationship with Cal is causing not only her but her family problems. Although some of the focus is taken away from the disaster, the romance between the two leads adds an emotional depth unseen in previous Titanic films. This type of style was duplicated in the more recent Pearl Harbour but with less success. The best scene in the film, and most people's personal favourite, is the sequence in which Rose poses for Jack for one of his portraits (the picture which is found at the start of the film). This scene helps to cement the chemistry between Rose and Jack until the end, as their love becomes tied not only emotionally but physically.

Billy Zane's performance as the unstable Cal is also a highlight, particularly when he finds out that his fiance is cheating on him, and his reaction to this news. He really is the villain of the piece, but is necessary to help add pace to proceedings, as Rose and Jack not only have to try and get off the ship but have to contend with Cal chasing after them. I also liked Kathy Bates performance as the 'unsinkable' Molly Brown, who was an actual passenger on the ship. Kathy Bates is normally known for her psychotic roles such as in Stephen King's Misery, but here she gives a very bubbly and humorous performance, if at times rather annoying. In fact the acting from all the cast is of a high quality, in particular Kate Winslet, who was an unknown before this film launched her into superstardom.

The final third is of course the most emotional and the most spectacular part of the film, with some truly breathtaking special effects as we watch the ship slowly sink into the ocean. There are also some very emotional shots of different people on different parts of the ship saying goodbye to each other, from a mother in the third class rooms telling her children a bedtime story, to an elderly couple in bed together, waiting for the moment to come. It is the scenes between Rose and Jack at the end of the film that, unless you have a heart of stone, will really move you to tears. Although there is suffering going on all around the ship director Cameron chooses to focus on the two leads until the end, as it is they we care about most, having followed them from start to finish.

As the film ends we are treated to Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On", which has been played so many times since the film was released that I've become rather sick of it. However at the time I thought this was a perfect ending to a pretty much perfect film, and fits in with the Irish type music used throughout the film. Another good thing is the way past and present are juxtaposed in such a simple but effective way, helping to put the scale of the drama in context and also allowing extra detail to be put in. The film may be over 3 hours long but it really does fly by, with both the drama of Rose and Jack's relationship and the drama of the film keeping me firmly in my seat.

DVD>>>

This four disc special edition is exhaustive, containing many different features. The main disadvantage is the fact that the film is on two discs, meaning that you have to change the disc halfway through the film, which is really very silly. Aside from this the extras are very good. Disc 1 and 2 contain commentaries from James Cameron and the rest of the crew, with disc 2 also containing an alternate ending. There are also 29 deleted scenes on disc 3, and documentaries, trailers, galleries and featurettes on disc 4. All in all this is a really good selection of extras, but it should be seeing as its spread over 4 discs. If you are a big fan of Titanic then its worth going for this special edition, because it really does contain a lot of material.

Conclusion>>>

Titanic is really a great film, with a strong cast and superb direction from James Cameron, who really gets the best out of his cast. Although Kate Winslet gives a fine performance as upper class Rose, I did enjoy Leonardo DiCaprio's performance as down and out Jack who aspires for better things, even if his acting is not as good as Winslet's. I feel that rather then tainting the image of the Titanic with a soppy love story, this film brings the story to life more through good old fashioned romance, and helps to relate the story of the Titanic to a younger audience. This is not just a disaster film where a ship sinks and people die, it's much more than that, with Cameron's direction showcasing this beautifully.

The combination of the film and the extensive extras make this DVD particularly special, but it's still the film that leaves us gripped, with action, drama, tragedy and romance all playing a part in what is truly an outstanding movie.

A great review!! I love the film. I really want to know what happens in the alternate ending with this set, but I don't think it is worth the money as I already have the film, might see if I can rent it from anywhere!
