Received this as a Christmas present, which is James Cameron's classic 1997 film with lots of extras thrown in for good measure.
The film basically is another telling of the Titanic disaster in 1912 where over 1500 people lost their lives after the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank. It opens with a deep sea exploration of the Titanic in search of the "Heart of the Ocean" gem. After retrieving a safe all that was found was a drawing of Rose (Kate Winslett) wearing the gem. The now old Rose sees a feature about this on the television and joins the team on the exploration of the Titanic.
Whilst aboard the research ship she tells her story on the Titanic, where she boards at Southampton with her fiancé Cal (Billy Zane) for their passage to America. At the same time Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) wins his passage to America in a game of cards. During the voyage a love develops between Jack and Rose, despite their class divide and the best efforts of Cal and his henchman/butler (David Warner, who was also in SOS Titanic in 1979) to break up the blossoming romance.
After the Titanic hits the iceberg and begins to sink, Jack is framed for stealing the gem and "imprisoned". Rose sets off to rescue Jack, as the ship slips further under the waves, and so the two set off in their hazardous attempt to get off the ship. After all the lifeboats have left Rose and Jack are left to jump into the freezing Atlantic as the ship finally sinks. Rose is finally rescued by a returning lifeboat after Jack had passed away, and eventually taken to America by the Carpathia, where she discovers the gem in her overcoat pocket.
After recalling her story, (old) Rose walks onto the deck of the research ship, and drops the gem back into the sea, thus returning it to the Titanic. During the night she passes away and is reunited with the passengers and crew of Titanic.
That's a short account of the film so what extras do you get on your 4 discs?
Disc 1 - Part one of the film, commentaries from James Cameron and the crew, the cast, a historic commentary and branching footage. Disc 2 - Part two of the film, commentaries from James Cameron and the crew, the cast, a historic commentary and branching footage. Also contains an alternative ending and the Celine Dion video "My Heart Will Go On". Disc 3 - 29 deleted scenes with optional commentary and Titanic parodies Disc 4 - Production featurettes, trailers, TV spots, still galleries, videomatics and documentaries.
The cost; I believe that this retails at £19.99 in most high street stores, although can be picked up for £17.99 on-line.
Personally, whilst I thought all the extras were extremely interesting I was disappointed in the layout of this "Collectors Edition". The most disappointing factor was keeping the alternative ending and deleted scenes separate from the film. I was hoping that the film would have the deleted scenes and the alternative ending inserted into the film, thus creating a new cut of the film. The alternative ending was slightly disappointing as it was remarkably similar to the original.
Final thoughts; Great for the deleted scenes, commentaries, documentaries and all the other extras, disappointing in the layout of the "Collectors Edition".
