Corpse Bride is the latest animated outing from Tim Burton (director of Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare before christmas,Bigfish to name a few), telling the story of a bittersweet romance set in two worlds.
The movie is set in the 19th Century where two families are set to marry, each hoping to gain riches and higher status by the upcoming nuptuals. Victor Von Dort is our clumsy and clueless groom to be, from the 'nouvoe' rich Von Dort family; hoping to up their social status by marrying their son to the hopeless romantic Victoria from the Everglot family - lords and ladys they may be...but money is something they don't have!
The two youngsters don't meet each other until the day before their wedding, at the wedding rehearsal; where its love at first sight! However, Victor being Victor messes up the rehearsal .. from dropping the ring under his mother-in-law to be dress..to actually setting it on fire! He is deamed 'not ready to get married' and has until dawn to learn his vows (at the same time we meet a 'mysterious stranger'...)
While learning his vows in the dark and foggy woods (as you do!) he realises how much he loves Victoria and the words finally come easily to him, unfortunately, while doing so he places the ring of his beloved on the finger of a corpse and soon finds himself in the land of the not-living
From here its all fun and games (well not really...more like singing and dancing) while victor races against time to make his way back to the living in order to marry the girl of his dreams.....with lots of nasty bumps and suprises along the way!
An excellent story, funny, romantic and very entertaining - told in true classic Burton style! Beautifully animated, with voiceovers from the likes of Johny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson, Christopher Lee, Albert Finney, Joana Lumley...just to name a few!
The collector edition DVD set comes with a 8 postcard set, and a beautifully illustrated book 'Tim Burtons Corpse Bride: the illustrated story' which includes original story boads. This is a must have for all Corpse bride and Tim Burton fans!
The book is just under 100 pages, in full colour...well illustrated with original storeyboards..and images from the actual film. The book tells the story of the movie, including much of the dialogue and many of the lyrics to the songs in the movie. A great read after watching the movie, bringing back fond memories and chuckles.
