"Thumbelina", produced by Golden Films in the year 1993 and released on DVD by Goodtimes Entertainment and other companies worldwide, is based on the classic story by master story-teller, Hans Christian Andersen. It's the story of a little girl, smaller than a human thumb, who lives with her father down in the valley and away from the rest of the little people in the meadows. The story begins when the little girl's father tells her about some cracks that have appeared in the dam next to a small pond. The old man, who works as watch-keeper of the dam, worries that when spring comes, the snow from the top of the mountains will melt and flow down into the valley filling up the pond; the dam won't take the pressure and it will break, allowing the water to flow over the meadow, drowning the little people who live there. The old watch-keeper knows that he is too old to take on the journey to where the prince lives and tell him about the upcoming catastrophe, that's why he asks his daughter to make the long trip instead. The little girl sees no other option but to accept, for the love of her father and love for the little people. The little girl is soon on her way and after a long day of travelling, she stops to rest inside a red tulip. As she sleeps, the tulip is taken away by a sneaky old medicine woman, who sells the tulip to a woman who wishes to have a child of her very own. The woman is delighted with her new daughter, even though she is smaller than her thumb. Seeing her small size, the woman names the child "Thumbelina". When she wakes up, Thumbelina tries to explain to the woman about her important mission and how the lives of the little people may be at stake if she doesn't reach the prince in time, but it's no use, the woman refuses to listen, so thrilled she is with her new companion. That night, a frog enter's the woman's house and steals Thumbelina away as she sleeps. Thus, begins Thumbelina's long quest through a big world of meadows, fields and the four seasons. The hard days of winter make Thumbelina's journey a hard one, but luckily she makes a number of wonderful friends along the way who give her a hand. Unfortunately, she also meets Mona, a seemingly innocent and kind old mouse who invites Thumbelina to spend the long winter with her in her comfortable home, but when the opportunity comes for her to earn valuable goods in exchange of convincing the girl to marry an ugly old mole, she wastes no opportunity.
Golden Films' "Thumbelina" is probably one of the sweetest, most charming films I grew up with, and it is without a doubt a fine example of what children's films should be like. From the very start, "Thumbelina" features lovely classical music, an interesting, intriguing storyling and a delightful cast of colorful characters. There's hardly any flaws here at all, the only thing perhaps, is the lower quality of animation. Still, the film features beautifully detailed and colorful backgrounds, a fantastic voice cast and a lovely opening song. Compared to Don Bluth's rather terrible take on the classic story, Golden Films' production really takes the trophy for far superior of the two, without any mushy, irritating characters, bad song numbers and depressing plots. I would definitely recommend this film to any parent looking for a good quality film for their children, it is really worth it, especially for the little money you'll have to pay to get it. Highly recommended, one of Golden Films' best.

Advantages: Memorable scores & songs, characters & stories Disadvantages: Animation level compared to modern is just standard
Having grown up on every animated fairytale feature that was available as a child, I consider myself something of an authority on classic animation films, not only of Disney but of Warner Bros and Dreamworks, Studio Gihbli and many others also. So before I begin I would just like to say to everyone who thinks that either or both Anastasia & Thumbelina are Disney productions THINK AGAIN! Anastasia is a 20th Century Fox production, whilst Thumbelina comes from Warner Brothers. Now that I have that little bugbear out of the way, we are free to continue.
Both of these films played a role equal to that of Disney for me as a child, despite never getting quite the fuss or attention they may have deserved - and would certainly have got if they were attached to the Disney label. I may have a slight bias in that both remind me of that ...
Advantages: Soppy romanticism, Barry Manilow, Jacquimo the sparrow Disadvantages: For some the soppy romanticism. Not a feminist's movie.
Thumbelina is the well-known Hans Christian Anderson tale of a girl no bigger than your thumb. Here it is adapted by Don Bluth who directed it along with Gary Goldman for Disney. Both directors were involved in another well-known Disney classic, American Tail.
A couple long for a child of their own and they receive the blessing of this tiny daughter. Naturally she is lavished with love by her family, but due to her size she still has many problems, it's difficult to be a small girl in an environment designed for big people. Thumbelina starts to feel this and the fact that she is the only one of her size. She expresses a wish to be bigger. To cheer her up her mother tells her a tale about people her own size, fairies. So that night Thumbelina stays up play-acting that she meets a fairy prince at a fairy ball. And then rather ...
