Advantages: A fantastic story, wonderful classical music, great voice actors, a colorful environment. Disadvantages: Weaker animation quality.
"Thumbelina", produced by Golden Films in the year 1993 and released on DVD by Goodtimes Entertainment and other companies worldwide, is based on the classic story by master story-teller, Hans Christian Andersen. It's the story of a little girl, smaller than a human thumb, who lives with her father down in the valley and away from the rest of the little people in the meadows. The story begins when the little girl's father tells her about some cracks that have appeared in the dam next to a small pond. The old man, who works as watch-keeper of the dam, worries that when spring comes, the snow from the top of the mountains will melt and flow down into the valley filling up the pond; the dam won't take the pressure and it will break, allowing the water to flow over the meadow, drowning the little people who live there. Advantages: Memorable scores & songs, characters & stories Disadvantages: Animation level compared to modern is just standard
Having grown up on every animated fairytale feature that was available as a child, I consider myself something of an authority on classic animation films, not only of Disney but of Warner Bros and Dreamworks, Studio Gihbli and many others also. Both of these films played a role equal to that of Disney for me as a child, despite never getting quite the fuss or attention they may have deserved - and would certainly have got if they were attached to the Disney label. I may have a slight bias in that both remind me of that ...

"...Freewheeling cinematic adaptation....Thoroughly engaging....Benson makes an ideal Thumbelina..." (New York Times, p.C19, 30/03/1994)
DVD Description
With its pretty songs and good characters, THUMBELINA will delight children. The film--which uses more computer graphics than previous Don Bluth films--tells the fable of the Hans Christian Andersen heroine Thumbelina (Jodi Benson), a tiny girl born to a childless woman from a flower. Longing to find someone her size, she falls in love with a fairy prince, Cornelius (Gary Imhoff), only to be kidnapped by a band of show business toads and their singing Ma (Charo). That's just the beginning of Thumbelina's adventures and her quest to be reunited with her prince--and it's an adventure filled with danger and excitement.
