Switching on the tv a couple of nights ago I came across this film just as it was about to start, considering I had nothing better to do I decided to sit back and watch. To my very pleasant surprise it turned out to be a black comedy starring the brilliant Danny Devito and Billy Crystal. I watched the whole thing and loved it so much I bought the DVD as it was on offer.
Story : Larry ( Billy crystal ) is an author suffering from writers block, this has been brought about by his ex wife ( Kate Mulgrew ) who has not only left him but published his bestselling book in her name and therefore taking all the glory and money. Meanwhile Owen ( Devito ) is an average Joe still living with his mother from hell ( Anne Ramsay ). He signs up for a book writing class which is taught by Larry.
Desperate for Larry to read his piece Owen puts it on top of every new pile of class work however Larry ignores it. Needless to say Owen starts following Larry around untill Larry gives up and reads Owens Story. The story is extremely brief and is about a murder, Larry tells Owen to see a hitchcock film to understand how to develop his story into something a little more creative and clever.
Owen visits the cinema and sees a film, it tells of how two strangers kill each others foes thus removing all possible motives and trails between the victim and the killer. This just dosen't have a bearing on the book though it also has a bearing on reality. After overhearing Larry say he wants to kill his wife in the school canteen, Owen formulates a plan. If he kills Larry's wife then Larry can kill his momma, what ensues is a comedy of errors that result in a couple of unexpected twists as Owens plan is put into action.
Cast : Billy Crystal ( when Harry met Sally, analyse this ) plays Larry. Larry is highly volatile every time he sees her hears his wife mentioned, he is also impatient but has a very caring kind side aswell. Billy plays this character wonderfully as his methodical acting style and comedy stylings really bring life into the character, and is very similar to his performance in analyse this. Furthermore his delivery and mannerisms really show the increasing tension and annoyance he is feeling from his relationship with Owen.
Danny Devito ( Twins, Jewel of the nile ) is Owen, a simple man living with his momma, however he has run out of patience for being pushed around by her, but can't bring himself do doing anything to hurt her. Devito is superb in this role, he brings alot of energy to the performance and his many facial expressions and general body language highlight with great effect the simpleton he is playing. I would defy anyone not to laugh in the phone scene in Hawaii.
Anne Ramsay ( the goonies ) plays momma, she looks evil, she sounds evil, she acts evil, she is the devil. She plays the part very well as you really get a sense of wanting to see her snuff it so that Owen can finally be happy.
Kate Mulgrew ( star trek nemesis ) plays Larrys ex, although she has little screen time, she puts on a performance that would want make you hope she suffered some sort of misfortune after what she did to poor Larry.
Effects : produced in 1988 there are no effects to mention, plus they probably would'nt fit into the theme of the film. However like most classic films this one has a strong script, great cast and original story and therefore does not need to be saved by holywoods tendency to go over the top.
music : very simple piano pieces similar to those used in other comedys of the 80's, which just play along gently with the scenes and provide a nice backdrop to the setting.
Extras : - Wide Screen - trailer - English / German / French
To conclude, this is a very funny black comedy, the cast are excellent in bringing the story to life, and the story itself is original. Also a strong script, great settings and an aproppriate soundtrack makes this one of the best comedys I have ever seen. This DVD is available on amazon from new at £4.11 and is worth every penny.
...these is an attempt to throw her from a train. Hence the title.
De Vito however has a volte-face and decides that he cannot live without his mum. However, Crystal has finally found inspiration and goes on to write a thriller called ‘Throw Momma From The Train’. His former pupils seem to be successful and he hopes to emulate them. Our friend mentioned at the start has a best seller with his copulation coffee table book.
De Vito turns ... ...also called, you guessed it, ‘Throw Momma From The Train’. Crystal has a fit and tries to strangle De Vito. He stops though when he realises that De Vito’s tome is only a children’s pop-up book and not the thriller he assumed it was. And so everyone lives happily ever after.
A good film, plenty of slapstick and verbal laughs. ...

Throw Momma From The Train is an outstanding film with exemplary cast performances. It stars Billy Crystal (When Harry Met Sally, Analyze That) as Larry Donner a writing tutor for adults; his own personal writing career was not doing very well since his wife stole his book ideas. His class all are pretty much no hopers and have peculiar ideas for there books. And one of his students is Owen Lift (played by co-star and Director; Danny DeVito - Twins, ... ...it; he was going to Throw Momma From The Train.
Near the end of the film; we find out that Larry has finally been inspired to do a book and when Owen comes over, Larry had just finished.
Owen too has news, he's written a book about the past months which the film is set. This is when Larry starts strangling Owen as that is what his book is based. I'll leave it there and to find out the ending you must see the film. Overall I would say an exceptionally ...

This is a typical 1980s back comedy, and as entertaining as any of its genre, depending on how you like this kind of thing. I found it watchable, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to see it again. Kate Mulgrew's part in the film is minor, as Billy Crystal's character's ex-wife. He is a writer, struggling, but she has just published a novel and struck it rich. The problem is that he claims she stole the whole thing from him. We see her on his ... ...he is filled with jealousy and agression, basically ends up wishing her dead. Long story short the film spoofs Hitchcock, and Crystal and DeVito (whose charater wants his abusive, cranky old mother dead) fall into a misunderstanding about a you-do-my-murder, I'll-do-yours scenario. Nobody dies, of course, and everything works out wonderfully in the end. Kate's portrayal of the bitch ex-wife is perfect, but so small is her part that we don't really ...

DVD Description
Owen (Danny DeVito) is a friendless would-be mystery writer who has had all he can take. He would do anything to get rid of his overbearing mother (Anne Ramsey), whose howling voice and domineering attitude have pushed him to the absolute limit. He even strikes a deal with his writing teacher, Larry (Billy Crystal), to knock off Larry's much-hated ex-wife (Kate Mulgrew), on the condition that the instructor will reciprocate and get rid of Owen's mom. Ramsey is so terrific in her role that the audience eventually roots for her to be killed. DeVito directed this very dark, very funny comedy, which owes a big debt to the Alfred Hitchcock thriller STRANGERS ON A TRAIN.
