You do get to see the robbery, and the planning part of the robbery and all the criminals are introduced and you get to see how they all met, but the main focus of the movie I found, was that it focused on Clooney and Lopez's characters to see how they would behave around each other and whether they would be able to do their jobs without letting the other get in the way.
