Someone is watching you!
Advantages: Great story and technically outstanding Disadvantages: Lack of special features on the DVD
...across the way from the rear window of his Greenwich Village apartment complex. From his apartment he can see in to all the window and thus the 'lives' of the apartments facing him and in his own imagination he slowly gets to know the people making up names and stories for what their lives are like. He gradually becomes fascinated with on particular apartment where a middle aged couple live and soon he realises that a murder has been committed. No ... ...this purpose. In Rear Window Hitchcock plays with our emotions at first what Jeff is doing makes us feel uncomfortable, he is after all invading people's privacy, this is clearly wrong but we the audience are complicit in this activity we are also looking though Jeff's eye through his zoom lens and soon our curiosity overrides our sense of shame over being a 'peeping tom'. With such a claustrophobic setting and a small principle cast Hitchcock has ...

The dizzy height of Hitchcock's success
Advantages: Suspenseful, beautifully filmed Disadvantages: None for me
...best film, I have seen Vertigo many times, yet each time manage to find something else in it that I didn't notice before. This time is no different. It is a perfect mixture of suspense coupled with the unexpected, great acting and direction. If you only watch one Hitchcock, this is the one to watch.
Scottie is played by James Stewart, an actor that I have seen in many films and like without thinking he is outstanding. In Vertigo, he gives an almost ... ...he is apparently suffering from vertigo where I felt that his performance was a little over-exaggerated. Apart from that though, he shows that he is more than just a pretty face and really can act.
Kim Novak, at first glance, is nothing more than eye candy as the confused Madeleine. She certainly does look good, sticking to classic cuts and plain colours that exentuate her beauty. However, there is more to her than this. Although sometimes guilty ...

A brave party to host - but will they get found out?
Advantages: Stunning filming and direction, the subtleties, two leads Disadvantages: Some average acting from the supporting cast, but still okay
...or four Hitchcock films, and each one has impressed me greatly. I shall certainly be seeking out more. If you want to buy Rope on DVD, it is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.92, and I would say that this masterclass of presenting a dramatic thriller is well worth having. Recommended! ...

She Should Have Know Better - and So Should He
Advantages: Doris Day Disadvantages: Out of date social ideas
...has been kidnapped)? This is the scene where Day is at her best, a best I never knew she had in her…………It could have been so easy to overplay the panic, but she never puts a moan wrong. Occasionally the acting is a little over the top in later scenes, but never to the detriment of the overall story.
The story? A country surgeon-doctor from rural USA (James Stewart) and his recently married wife (Doris Day), a former singer, are travelling through ... ...about an assignation attempt, and the son is kidnapped to keep Stewart quiet. The parents' attempts to find their son lead them through a number of well filmed and acted red-herrings….and eventually they arrive at not one, but two great climaxes, both of which feature Doris Day.
There are a number of twists of the story which would never pass muster in society today, but the story itself is sound and well worth watching. Just don't take its beliefs ...

They really don't make them like this anymore
Advantages: A wonderful viewing experience Disadvantages: It's classic Hitchcock - you won't find any bad points!
Rope (1948) was Alfred Hitcock's first film as Director and Producer and was also the first of his movies to be filmed in colour. The film opens quite startlingly as we witness the murder of poor David by two of his fellow academics, Brandon and Phillip. After being strangled with the rope to which the title refers, David's lifeless body is unceremoniously heaved into a large wooden chest in the centre of the apartment in which the entire film unfolds. ... ...charater's backs. If you haven't seen this film before you're in for a complete treat. And if you have seen it before, do yourself a favour and check it out again. "Masterpiece" is a word which is often overused but Rope truly is one. Review also on dooyoo.co.uk ...
