Nothing is what it seems
Review of The Recruit DVD by frkurt

Advantages: Good plot potential
Disadvantages: Clunky plot development, so-so acting

...this film is that with the CIA, nothing is what it seems. Unfortunately, that is not always true. If this film seems to drag a bit at times, that is what it seems. If it seems a bit repetitive and lacking in originality in dialogue and plot situations, that is what it seems. If it seems that the star power of Al Pacino and Colin Farrell aren't enough to raise this film from B-film levels, that is what it seems. Farrell is supposed to be a techno-geek. ...
...of disbelief is required from the outset (one can make the same criticism of Keanu Reeves in the Matrix films, but those were much better films). Farrell as James Clayton is a programmer geek by day, sexy bartender by night (that part is convincing). Clayton is the sort of person that Walter Burke (played by Pacino) seems to want in the CIA, so he sets out to recruit him. Clayton has a secret buried in his past - his father disappeared, and he always ... Read review

My favourite film of all time!
Review of No Way Out (Wide Screen) by BlueDruid

Advantages: intense suspense, Costner looks great, smooth and slick, Pritchard the sinister aide!
Disadvantages: superfluous ending twist, subsequent viewings not as good as first, lack of extras on DVD

No Way Out is quite simply one of the best films ever made in my opinion! It relies very much on the fast pace and the element of surprise - there are many twists and turns. So if you haven't already seen it I urge you with all my heart and film-loving soul not to read the following paragraphs of plot detail until you have. It truly will spoil the film - it would have for me anyway. The first viewing is amazing but subsequent viewings cannot match ...
...romantic and sexy, you have no idea what a tense and fast ride you are going to end up getting with this film! The suspense gets so high I was punching my duvet on the bed shouting 'no way! no way!' Slightly embarassing to admit but true nonetheless. And yes Kevin Costner does look amazingly fit in his slim fitting white navy uniform. This is when he is in his early thirties. The sex scene in the back of the limo is very erotic and sensual. The plot ... Read review

Chimp in control!
Review of The Bank Job DVD by dangaroo

Advantages: Authentic 70s style, fun heist
Disadvantages: Additional story lines for no apparent reason

...films, spying and heists and the like -this film definitely appealed. I thoroughly enjoyed both Snatch and Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrells and was interested to see how the work of Guy Ritchie's side-kick Roger Donaldson worked out. The storyline which involved photos of important people, including a royal family member and an important judge in compromising nuddy positions with sordid sorts was always going to be quite exciting. To remove these ...
...cockneys (3 if you include the lookout) led by the ape like Jason Statham. It sounds like fun already does it not! The heist is realistic and comes alive on the screen, despite Statham's distinct stiffness and chimp like features he pulls the part off well, even if t does feel a bit like one stage up from Phil Mitchell. The manipulating posh bird played bv Saffron Burrows returns from Morocco and is caught with drugs at customs and a friend in British ... Read review

Opening Pandora's Box...
Review of The Bank Job DVD by MarcoG

Advantages: A true story! Good escapism! Great action
Disadvantages: Some of the performances aren't that great!

...heist gone wrong… in all the right ways. This film has been described as a thriller, crime, mystery and a brit flick a la 'Lock Stock'. When having a look at the cinema listings, choosing something to go and see, this film did not really appeal, as the genres already mentioned aren't among the types of film I would usually be interested in. I prefer to watch big blockbusters, or films with a more avant garde nature. So, allowing my partner to ...
...At first, I half-heartedly followed the plot and within about 20 minutes, I was hooked. Set in the 70s, this film is based on the true story of 'Baker Street Bank Robbery' from 1971, when a group of 'dodgy' characters plotted to break into Lloyds Bank (on Baker Street) and rob the contents of it's vault of safety deposit boxes. This story had a 'gagging order' on it from the Government, for over 30 years, and after watching, I am not surprised. ... Read review
