I love this film! My mum loves this film! All of my girlfriends love this film! Even my gran loves this film!I really don't see how 3 very attractive men being bedazzled by an equally attractive baby isn't the storyline of every womans dreams!
Now to the serious stuff: The story opens on three comfortably confirmed bachelors living the high life in their trendy apartment in NYC. We have the serious architect (complete with outdated moustache) The frivolous actor, and the cartoon designer (apparently this was a really 'cool' job at the time) Whilst 'the actor' is out of town, on a job which for some reason involves coconuts and drag, the other two guys are having the time of their lives with women, parties, and other guy stuff: Enter baby. In traditional 'baby on a church doorstep' style, a baby girl is left on their front doorstep with a note attached outlining that she is the daughter of the actor and that her name is Mary. This is where the really fun stuff begins! Can you imagine giving a baby to two men who have never seen one up close before and asking them to look after it? Exagerate this twofold for comic effect, and you have what happens next in the story. They don't know how to feed her, her nappy won't stay on, and she seriously cramps their love lives! What happens next comes as a bit of a shock; all American films at this time needed a 'baddy' and this one was no exception. This leads to a somewhat ridiclous, somewhat predictable chase involving drugs, the baby, and a man with a sneer. Obviously everything turns out alright in the end: it's the Eighties!! Nothing bad happens!
But Where is Mary's mother is all this I hear you ask? Well in a typically American desire for moral justice, she returns for her baby, and (if you can willingly suspend your disbelief for just one moment) they all live happily ever after in their newly decorated (you have to see it to believe it!) family- bachelor pad!
This is a genuinely funny and touching film. It really shows how having a baby can turn your whole world upside down. Some of the Eighties clothes are comedy in themselves (especially the women) and maybe nowadays some of the jokes seem a little bit cheesy, but I think its really shown itself to be a film that can withstand the test of time. The only minus point is that it is very very Americanised, but if you can overcome that then this is a film for you
This film works on so many levels that it is accessible to everyone. I don't know anyone who doesn't love it: even my boyfriend (although he pretends to protest every time I put it on!) It's a real family classic, perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon that I would truly recommend.
