terrifying might-have-been, although a great deal of what it says about the probable aftermath of a nuclear attack remains horribly pertinent. Scripted by Barry Hines (author of the novel on which Ken Loach'sKeswas based) and directed by Mick Jackson (who later went to Hollywood withThe BodyguardandVolcano), at the timeThreadsseemed like a response to the American TV movieThe Day Afteralthough it stands nobly on its own. Showing the after-effects of World War III on the United Kingdom by concentrating on two Sheffield families linked by an unplanned pregnancy, it illustrates the scientific, political, medical and social consequences of the severing of the many vital connective "threads" that support a Western society. Grim in a particularly 1980s way, this is a compulsive if uncomfortable watch and accomplishes a great deal without the distraction of spectacle, picking through all the melted milk bottles and firing squad traffic wardens to find the human horror at the heart of it all. --Kim Newman

Advantages: fascinating, relentlessly brutal, good performances, convincing despite its small budget Disadvantages: None
I remember watching threads for the first time back in school, and finding it both terrifying and fascinating at the same time. I watched it again recently, and the film has certainly lost none of its power to shock. I remember watching threads for the first time back in school, and finding it both terrifying and fascinating at the same time. I watched it again recently, and the film has certainly lost none of its power to shock. Made back in 1984, Threads is a British made-for-tv film in which Britain is all-but annihilated in a nuclear holocaust. Set in Sheffield, the film starts in a very innocuous fashion, filmed in a low-budget way that brings to mind old episodes of coronation street and lulls you into a false sense of security. People chatter away in pubs whilst a television in the corner voices portentous omens about the conflict between Russia and the west in Iran. There is talk of nuclear war, but of course, nobody believes it could actually really -happen-.
Young lovers Ruth Beckett & Jimmy Kemp find themselves in difficult circumstances when Ruth discovers she is pregnant- many arguments with their exasperated parents later, Jimmy and Ruth rent a home and try and start a new life together. The acting is sufficiently good to make the drama convincing and when the bombs do finally drop it comes as a shock, even though you knew it was inevitable, as the soap-like plot is suddenly dragged into a chaotic world of death and destruction.
Despite the minimal budget the special effects are excellent- buildings are blown to pieces, people are roasted alive, thrown into trees and buried under huge piles of rubble. The survivors fare even worse, most of them succumbing to radiation positioning within days. A scene in a local hospital is particularly brutal, as people scream uncontrollably whilst having limbs amputated with no anaesthetic in dirty, unlit wards. Screen-time is split between the survivors on the surface and the local council in a bunker beneath the town hall. The council are blocked off from the outside world, buried beneath the rubble, whilst on the surface the remaining threads of authority continue to break down, traffic wardens having been given guns and ordered to shoot on sight when innocent people try to storm the local authority's compound.
The horror goes on and on, the whole film presented with documentary-like headings that announce the passage of time from the terrifying hours and later minutes of the nuclear attack to the months and years that drag on afterwards. Britain returns back to iron-age levels of technology and population, as ragged, cateract-suffering survivors try to scrape a living from the ground, weaving woollen garments to keep themselves warm. We see real-life photographs of death and devastation, -pictures from the Holocaust and Hiroshima amongst others- and photos of men reopening the coal mines and pressing locomotives back into service; fields of failed crops and an old emaciated man lying dead in his filthy bed.
Threads is an absolutely mesmerising film, and its gritty realism and relentless brutality makes it far, far scarier than any Hollywood shocker out there. Absolutely brilliant, see it now, if you haven't already.
Advantages: CHILLING VISION OF A NUCLEAR WAR, WELL WRITTEN & PRODUCED Disadvantages: A LITTLE DATED
The long awaited release of this feature on DVD has finally come to pass. There was a great deal of interest in this film that saw the old VHS version selling on certain auction sites for as much as £34 a time.
The film is about two families drawn together after their daughter Ruth becomes pregnant by her fiancee. Both families try and come to terms with the fact that their son and daughter are having a baby with neither of them having any money. ... ...start their life together.
However, things happening abroad make the nation paranoid about the possibility of a nuclear attack and adverts appear on the television about what to do in the event of an attack. Families go out and buy up food and construct homemade shelters within their houses. Then the unthinkable happens and Britain is struck by a Nuclear attack. The aftermath shows the results of the attack. No power or water with food starting ...

Advantages: Lots of magic, good balue for money as it has two of his specials Disadvantages: None i loved it
I stumbled across this dvd when i was looking to buy a magic dvd to see good modern magic, i didnt intend to buy a Blaine dvd but i must say i wasnt dissapointed. This dvd is jam-packed with street magic, from gypsy thread routines to amasing card effects. It also includes Blaine doing the infamous levitation effect, where he levitates right off the street in front of peoples eyes.
The dvd mainly contains Blaines street magic rather than his now famous stunts, although it does include his first stunt, buried alive, in which he was buried in a glass coffin with no food only water.
I would highly recommend this dvd to any fan of Blaines as it contains his first two specials 'Magic Man' and 'Street Magic'. So it gives his fans a chance to see Blaine in action before all the fame and fortune.
This dvd contains ...
Advantages: Its heart is in the right place Disadvantages: It just doesn't work as a comedy or drama for me
and Miri go to a school reunion and bump into the dreamy guy Miri swooned over (Brandan Routh of Superman Returns fame), and his camp extravagant husband (Justin Long), a gay pornstar, Long is excellent and easily the best thing in the film, but its sad that i'm looking at it in that way.
Overall you have the usual suspect in Jason Mewes but this is a disappointingly weak comedy without Smiths usual subtle approach, the first half contains more laughs as the guys work out the logistics of making a film, the second half is slower and loses its thread too much. Its a forgettable film which has heart but not too much else to back it up unfortunately.
