writer-director David Kane's wry, funny study of six singletons in search of something--possibly love, possibly just sex--that will help them make sense of an untidy world. Aside from the acting, the film's strongest feature is its unflinching realism. The setting is North London's Camden Lock, an area that is in equal parts ultra-trendy and horrendously squalid. The characters reflect the locale: a circle of youthful drop-outs, wannabes and never-have-beens united in their common desire to surmount loneliness and find that elusive "perfect match". The central figures are newlyweds Danny and Hannah (the wonderful Douglas Henshall and Catherine McCormack) and the film in essence concerns itself with the fallout from the spectacular and rapid disintegration of their marriage. Danny first hooks up with cleaner-cum-nightclub singer Mary (a marvellously self-deprecating Kathy Burke), while Hannah finds lecherous womaniser Cameron (an unwashed Dougray Scott). Cameron's flatmate Liam (Ian Hart) fails to impressposh single mum Sophie (Jennifer Ehle in dreadlocks), who goes on to reject Danny and Cameron in turn, while Liam becomes dangerously obsessed by Hannah then Mary. So the merry-go-round of relationship swapping, unlikely coincidences and bittersweet life-lessons turns full circle.David Kane's comic dialogue is witheringly sharp, the situations (aside from all the coincidental meetings) are well-observed and the characters sympathetically three-dimensional (helped in no small part by the quality of the ensemble cast). The frequently hilarious comedy is tempered by an underlying despair: if it's not exactlyBrassed OfforThe Full Montyfor neurotic, self-obsessed metropolitans, it's a film that's at least happy to exist in the same genre and achieves the same poignant empathy with its characters. **Pardon the crudeness of the title, couldn't think of something better, or more appropriate to that matter**
You know how it is. You see a film advertised on the TV listings, you've never heard of it before, it's British. You recognise a few of the actors'/actresses' names, they're known alright, but not that well-known. The storyline has a feel to it of 'Been there, seen that', yet you still decide to give it the benefit of the doubt as there's nothing better on, and it's too late now to pop down the local video shop to get a decent film (i.e. you're really too lazy to do so, if you're being honest).
And so it was the case last Saturday night. I saw this film on teletext on BBC2, had a look on ITV's film section to read a summary of what to expect and thought 'oh well, we might as well watch it'. How pleasantly surprised I was!
The film's plot covers the usual subject that is quite abundant in our society nowadays. It starts with two people getting married, the man finds his now wife has been cheating on him all the while with his best man (poor sod, he hasn't been married for half an hour!) and decides to up and leave the wedding. Upon going to the airport thinking 'I'll still have my honeymoon holiday in Jamaica' he offers his wife's ticket to a cleaning lady, and things snowball from there.
In other scenes, you have two housemates. One a total neurotic possessive character, the other, a happy-go-lucky, I only care about myself, nutter. Another character is portrayed as a rebel single mother (from a rich background) who cannot hold down a steady relationship (hardly a surprise when according to her, everything is the other half's fault).
The setting is Camden, London, and all characters end up coming across each other (some even end up sleeping together) at some point through out the film, many a time with hilarious consequences, at other times, with tragic endings.
Sometimes, you expect nothing from something, the event happens, ends, and you are left with a wonderful sense of fulfillment and elevating surprise. This is exactly how I felt about this film. Though the subject matter is not something that would appeal to me instantaneously, I was left feeling slightly sad for the characters portrayed, yet had many a laugh in between not to render the film a weepy experience.
The individual acting was excellent by a very able cast, all British, I must add, and including Cathy buerk, Dougray Scott and Jennifer Ehle. However, the star of the show for me was Dougray Scott. The man was so sublime and believable in playing a total layabout who cares for nothing and no one's feelings, you wondered at times if he wasn't simply transforming his real life into film.
Some comic highlights/lines from the film include the following incidents:
- ' It takes two to have crap sex' - ' Ten feet from the finishing line, he gets a heart attack' - about an outside-chance racing horse who had a bet placed on him. - ' Fancy a pint?' - after being drowned in four pints by two ex-girlfriends. - 'If it's sex you're after, forget it!, I'm terrible'. - 'I can't understand all these people with self-mutilation, can you?' - from a hard-drug taking man who's having his umpteenth tattoo, criticising someone for a nose ring.
And many more like the ones above, but I won't spoil it for you any further.
I'm both puzzled and miffed as to why so many wonderful British-made films never have a chance in hell of making it to the big screen. Apart from the odd Four weddings and a funeral-esque picture every once in a blue moon, you rarely get to see or hear about one. Even if you do get a success, they turn out to be American-backed, with a mainly British cast. What a shame!
In summary, I loved this film. Complications of everyday lives, broken and weird relationships, personal insecurities, oddities of characters, etc, all came out in a wonderful mixture of humour and drama. The story was a little different than normal, and though, slightly pushing your boundaries of imagination in terms of believability in real life (surely, all those people cannot so coincidentally have their lives intertwined between each other at different times (then again, fate can and does work in mysterious ways). I'll be more than happy to fork out a rental fee to watch again, but I'll make sure of having some mates who'll enjoy it too and who'll share the laughs and the aahhhs.
Highly recommended, unless you totally despise the genre.
PS Fans of David Gray (me included) will enjoy a cameo role from the man, performing snippets of a couple of his songs. suffice to say, the title of the film is also a title of a track from his 'White ladder' album.
Advantages: Wonderful acting and a great soundtrack Disadvantages: Unlikely storyline
...frankly not credible. This is a romance with an edge: OK so there are break-ups aplenty but there is also relly loneliness and pain and these aspects prevent "This Year's Love" from being yet another sugar-coated love story. This film's characters know that life is not as easy as the films make it look.
The film's triumph is the characterisation; while the tangled web of relationships is scarcely credible, the characters certainly are. Despite the ... ...- it's all too much. This aspect made me want to scream!!
My favourite part of the film is undoubtedly the music, namely the David Gray tracks. Kathy Burke's character, Mary, is a backing singer in a band led by David Gray (although he is not named and has no lines) and several tracks are performed in the gig scenes. The laid back music of David Gray is perfect for the smoky club and Kathy Burke proves that she has a decent voice.
I do like this ...

Advantages: Very Funny, So Many Laughs! Disadvantages: Lack of Special Effects, But Are They Needed?
I Watch DVDs quite a lot, and mainly i watch live stand up comedy. There are lots of options when it comes to watching stand up, Peter Kay, Bill Bailey, Russell Brand, all quite funny, but in my opinion, not in the same league as Michael McIntyre!
I talk to my friends about which DVDs i like and don't like, and this one is my favourite, (hence reviewing it first!) and i regard Michael as one of the greatest prospects coming out of England at this time!
I'd first seen Michael on "Live at the Apollo" and have tracked his progress since! I actually bought this for my mum for Christmas, but have watched it since and loved every single minute! A must for comedy fans! The Best Comedy DVDThisYear! ...

One of my good friends gave my daughter a copy of thisDVD - Dora The Explorer - Rhymes and Riddles (Animated). My daughter then was one year old when she was given thisDVD. ThisDVD was so wonderful because my daughter really enjoyed all the rhymes and riddles. She also enjoyed the colorful animation of thisDVD and most of all she loved Dora's song "We did it". There is not a day that I do not let my daughter watch thisDVD. This has been very helpful to her listening skills, memory and speech. Now that she is already 4 years old, she still loves to watch Dora The Explorer - Rhymes And Riddles. I am very happy about thisDVD and I recommend this one to all the moms out there to have a copy. This is so great. ...

DVD Description
David Kane's THIS YEAR'S LOVE is a bittersweet comedy that follows a group of London twenty-somethings looking for romance and, of course, that special someone. When an apparently perfect relationship between tattoo artist Danny (Douglas Henshall) and dressmaker Hannah (Catherine McCormack) ends in tears on the wedding day, it's back to the singles scene for both of them. There they meet Liam (Ian Hurt), a passionate geek; Marey (Kathy Burke), a pub singer; Sophie (Jennifer Ehle), a former society brat and single mother; and Cameron (Dougray Scott), a roguish artist. One by one, their paths cross over the course of three years, leading to unusual, sad, and even hilarious situations.
