following the lives of five young lawyers who each share the same London home. Yet that simplicity shields what was, and remains, a groundbreaking series, one that never shirked away from any of the issues it chose to touch on.Across the two series that make up this unmissable boxset, we get to meet the full-of-himself Miles, the loud but troubled Anna, Milly the control-freak and the unsure Egg. Add in the upbeat Warren, whose gay but doesnt want his parents to know, and the confused and bisexual Ferdy, and you have a melting pot of emotions and stories that are as captivating to watch as they were when the show was first broadcast. At the core ofThis Lifes success though are some wonderful, career-making performances. The likes of Andrew Lincoln (Teachers,Love Actually) and Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean,The Talented Mr Ripley) have certainly used it as a springboard to launch their careers, and we can only hope to see more of the excellent Daniela Nardini and Amita Dhiri in the future. But for now, savour just what this is. Its astonishingly confident, moving, at times flat out hilarious but always unmissable. And its taken far too long to bring it all to DVD. Make the most of it now its here.--Simon BrewEND

dramaThis Lifewas a major event, albeit on it's own, cultish terms. The years have not diminished the show's impact, as box set videos such as this one demonstrate. It could have been awful--a British attempt to mirror the various American thirtysomething shows that proliferated during the decade. The programme's many detractors had a point, in thatThis Lifewas both self-consciously hip (through its use of music and film techniques) and shocking (plot lines dealing with gay and straight sex, drugs and violence) but what saved it--as was the case with the similarly deridedQueer As Folk--was the sheer quality of the script and cast. Series Two opens the morning after one of the pivotal points of the story, the long awaited coupling of Anna (Daniela Nardini, who dominates proceedings whenever on screen) and Miles (Jack Davenport) and the effect its fall-out has on them and the rest of their housemates Milly, Egg and Warren (Amita Dhiri, Jason Hughes and Andrew Lincoln). It's the relationship between these five main characters (four lawyers and one deeply confused ex-lawyer) that forms the crux of the programme, although there are some wonderful sub-plots and secondary characters. This Lifemay have been oft-copied since and the cast have oddly pretty much disappeared from view, but it remains eminently watchable and one of the BBC's finest dramas in recent years.--Phil Udell

chances of taking the plunge or purchasing this fascinating television series.
Since ThisLife ended in 1997 there is always talk of a new series of a movie telling the tale X amount of years on, so far this has not happened, but the launch of the series on DVD may increase the chances.
If drug abuse, sex scenes involving both straight and gay couples, and bad language offends you then ThisLife is maybe not for you. However if you like to see a real taste of real life which in my view is an understated view of ThisLife, then I advise you to see thisseries. It's warm and inviting and often very amusing. It presents the viewer with situations that many will have been in and never known how to react. Thislife engages those what if's and makes them happen.
Totally compelling viewing.

Advantages: A great continuation of a fanstastic series Disadvantages: It's the last series. Some might find the conclusion unsatisfiying.
The second series of Life on Mars continues Sam Tyler's journey that began in the first series. If you haven't seen the first series then this set won't make complete sense to you, though I think series two could stand alone as the first was fairly self-contained and had its own overal story to tell. Series Two is a little more arc orientated, being the last series, and every episode takes the story another step towards its conclusion.
So to the beginning. Life on Mars is a great mix of a cop-show, humour, fantasy and sci-fi with the marvelous addition of the 1973 setting.
The essence of Life on Mars is that of a traditional cop show. Series Two dives straight into the story, and the credits sequence gives a quick rundown of what the series is about. In 2006 Sam Tyler is a rather excellent policeman. He is struck down by a car ...

INTRODUCTION
If like me, you've never got over the fact it isn't 1996 any more, a retreat into nostalgia is always welcome. And herein lies the appeal of the DVD boxset of ThisLife, a cult drama from the mid 90s based on a group of cohabiting twentysomethings in central London, mostly involved in starting their careers in law. For people of a certain age, this is a welcome reminder of their 20s, and seeing the friends a decade on in this setting is quite interesting.
THE SHOW
The show is based around the lives of the 5 main protagonists in their nascent law careers. Having just graduated and moved into a house together, we see their day to day lives at work and friendships outside.
The method of shooting was at the time innovative, with the camera bouncing all over the place from one character to the other ...
