following the lives of five young lawyers who each share the same London home. Yet that simplicity shields what was, and remains, a groundbreaking series, one that never shirked away from any of the issues it chose to touch on.Across the two series that make up this unmissable boxset, we get to meet the full-of-himself Miles, the loud but troubled Anna, Milly the control-freak and the unsure Egg. Add in the upbeat Warren, whose gay but doesnt want his parents to know, and the confused and bisexual Ferdy, and you have a melting pot of emotions and stories that are as captivating to watch as they were when the show was first broadcast. At the core ofThis Lifes success though are some wonderful, career-making performances. The likes of Andrew Lincoln (Teachers,Love Actually) and Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean,The Talented Mr Ripley) have certainly used it as a springboard to launch their careers, and we can only hope to see more of the excellent Daniela Nardini and Amita Dhiri in the future. But for now, savour just what this is. Its astonishingly confident, moving, at times flat out hilarious but always unmissable. And its taken far too long to bring it all to DVD. Make the most of it now its here.--Simon BrewEND

dramaThis Lifewas a major event, albeit on it's own, cultish terms. The years have not diminished the show's impact, as box set videos such as this one demonstrate. It could have been awful--a British attempt to mirror the various American thirtysomething shows that proliferated during the decade. The programme's many detractors had a point, in thatThis Lifewas both self-consciously hip (through its use of music and film techniques) and shocking (plot lines dealing with gay and straight sex, drugs and violence) but what saved it--as was the case with the similarly deridedQueer As Folk--was the sheer quality of the script and cast. Series Two opens the morning after one of the pivotal points of the story, the long awaited coupling of Anna (Daniela Nardini, who dominates proceedings whenever on screen) and Miles (Jack Davenport) and the effect its fall-out has on them and the rest of their housemates Milly, Egg and Warren (Amita Dhiri, Jason Hughes and Andrew Lincoln). It's the relationship between these five main characters (four lawyers and one deeply confused ex-lawyer) that forms the crux of the programme, although there are some wonderful sub-plots and secondary characters. This Lifemay have been oft-copied since and the cast have oddly pretty much disappeared from view, but it remains eminently watchable and one of the BBC's finest dramas in recent years.--Phil Udell

leg from the morge where he brought it home from one of his classes to write an essay on it. He decides to strap it to the front of his car instead in the 1st episode!
The DVD is a simple set up and plays striaght on to the episodes, you can select play all, or view one by one. It contains the whole of series one of the young ones. The episodes are as follows; 1. Demolition. This is the first one ever and we see an intro duction to all the characters, including the landlord who has various other roles throughout the series. The basic plot appart from setting up and introducing characters is that the guys are living in their accomodation they have done for some time when one day they recieve a letter from the council informing them that their house is to be demolished. Naturally Vyvyan throws a tantrum and decides to beat them to the job ...

com is then a series of various events and their consequences to all parties.
So the first DVD in the set has the six episodes of Series One which were originally broadcast in 1975.
Plough Your Own Furrow
This is the episode which sets the scene for the whole series. We are introduced to the four main characters - Richard Briers as Tom, Felicity Kendall as Barbara, (the late) Paul Eddington as Jerry and Penelope Keith as Margot.
It's Tom's 40th birthday and he isn't happy working the daily grind as a draughtsman. He wants to change his life but can't decide how - he knows 'it' is out there but can't find out what 'it' is. Eventually he realises that he wants to drop out of the rat race completely and become self sufficient. After discussing the plan with Barbara they decide to go ahead.
Say Little Hen
This is the episode ...
Advantages: A fantastic fantastic series Disadvantages: Some of the 70s references will be lost on younger people.
by compelling plot and complex characters.
The DVD Extras are pretty good too (though perhaps there are a little fewer than I'd of liked, but I think I' m just being to eager to enjoy more things about the series) with commentaries and documentaries.
Life On Mars is a great DVD set and I highly recommend it. ...
