Whitfield kids have come home to spend the holiday with Ma' Dere (Loretta Devine) and her boyfriend Joe (Delroy Lindo). And each has brought plenty of baggage along with them. As the lights are hung and the tree is trimmed, secrets are revealed and ties are tested. But as their lives converge again, they join together to rediscover and celebrate the wonderful gift of family.

it's Maybe This Christmas. Most of the 13 tracks here lean more toward the mellower portion of the alternative spectrum. The title track--a tender and poignant plea for peace and understanding by the wonderful Ron Sexsmith--basically sets the pace for things. Coldplay's Chris Martin proves he's no Sinatra on the band's fairly faithful, piano-driven "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," but there's still something endearing about his occasionally off-key but totally sincere delivery. Jack Johnson puts an apt--and quite amusing--spin on "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (in which Rudolph takes the other reindeers to task for ridiculing him), and Phantom Planet do their best Everly Brothers crossed with Weezer thing and come off entirely likable on the ancient "Winter Wonderland." Most surprising, however, is Sense Field's cover of John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)." It's one of those songs that pretty much belongs to its creator, but the band's take on this classic is, in its own way, as enjoyable as John & Yoko's original. --Bill Holdship

I first saw this movie earlier on this year! It wasn't Christmas at the time I saw it , yet I still managed to fall in love with it. It's a perfect Christmas film which you can watch on Christmas film with the whole family gathered around. You can guarantee that everyone will be fascinated with it , just like I was! Once it had stated , I found that my eyes were glued to the screen the whole time.
I love Christmas movies , me! Without festive movies , Christmas isn't Christmas! You just have to have Christmas Movies! I find they really get me in the Christmas spirit! I could watch Christmas movies all year round without getting tired of them , although I do find I enjoy them so much more around the festive time. I can watch Christmas movies in the Summer and instantly get excited and can't wait for Christmas! One movie which has become a big favourite of mine is : This Christmas.

This Christmas revolves around the family involver's son coming home for the first time in four years! The movie is all about family , and what better way to celebrate than at Christmas! A simple story , yet one that you won't be able to predict which is why I love it so much! You are given little surprises throughout the whole film which is something I love , as it makes it so much more interesting! I was impressed by how well ALL (and there are many!) events linked so well with one another!

I think the director did a wonderful job of creating this perfect Christmas movie. I had never heard of this director before , although to be honest I'm not that familiar with directors anyway. Once I had finished watching this movie I typed the title into google and found a lot of information! I love finding out about films , actresses and actors after watching a film. On this particular search , I discovered that the director had in fact previously made a not-so-well-received film called Crossover. In a way I am relieved that the film he made before This Christmas was a disaster (sorry!) , as I think it was what give him a 'I'm gonna try harder' attitude. I also think that he was very brave to jump into such a well criticised genre. I think that the Christmas film genre appears to be more 'bitchy' and picked at , perhaps due to the reason that millions of people relate to Christmas and therefore have their own idea of the festive season and therefore compare Christmas films to their own personal experience. However , I must say that this director did a cracking job on this movie!
I like how this movie doesn't potray the perfect family as no one is perfect and so by having their ups and downs it shows that the family involved is normal and so is something absolutely everyone can relate to.
One criticism I have regarding this movie is the fact that it does star Chris Brown who is a young R n B singer (he also goes out with the pop star Rihanna! I have nothing against him , but my argument is that he has a huge follow of young female fans (say eleven and twelve year olds and above!) and because this film is quite rude in some places , I feel that it is setting a bad example!
Apart from that , it is an excellent Christmas film ; perfect for all the family! It's definatelty one to watch this festive season!
Advantages: Some nice performances. Disadvantages: Bland direction and hackneyed writing.
...embittered doormat housewife Lisa, but this is largely down to the way the part is written. She oozes desperation as the martyred mother, who longs to be recognised and has some nice snarky sibling chemistry with Leal. Laz Alonso plays her faithless husband Malcolm in full-on villain mode. You can see his plans from the outset because his duplicity and egotism are so clear-cut.
The soundtrack comprises all the cheesy Christmas faves you'd expect ... ...allows a whole raft of paper-thin performances to go unchecked. The musical choices are hackneyed and everything conspires to make this a very mediocre movie that will inevitably find its way into the pre-Christmas Channel 5 afternoon movie slot, where at least you won't have to pay to see it. ...

Advantages: None for me. Disadvantages: Poor acting, thin plot and just not funny!!
...has to be said that this film is particularly bad an even the Christmas movie buff`s surely could not find a reason to watch this every year as the festivities start.
The biggest problem with "this Christmas" for me is that it is meant to be a comedy/drama but in truth it is just not that funny and certainly not dramatic. The movie is based around the Whitfield family's first holiday together in four years and the fact that they all want it to go ... ...rate to say the least, this seems like an attempt to make an up to date classic Christmas film using mostly African Americans but it instead becomes just another run of the mill black teen movie.

...into present and real life. This film is't just a hollywood feel good film, but more of a realisic drama into the hidden secrets that are best not mentioned in a broken families lives. These are seen in the film as slightly dangerous out breaks of fighting and violence. The film is set around the mothers home in los angeles, and has a strong message about the importance of keeping a strong family and how hard it is when that family bond is broken. ...

Quick review of This Christmas (DVD)
This movie is not exactly a feel good film but definitely shows the hard truth. Set in the background of a family's christmas reunion in many many years, this movie brings out the emotions of every member of the family . with lots of dramatic moments and foul language ,still this movie manages to touch you; for at the end of the day everyone's a family. The litttle untold( probably better to be forgotten kind of) secrets bursting out at the most inappropriate times of the family's gathering leading to a lot of brawl makes one feel very sorry for the. These are situations that might happen in any family.Over all the movie is worth watching for the actors have performed very well, Loretta Devine as Ma'Dere ( Shirley Ann Whitfield) in particular. ...

Advantages: Lots of questions and lots of fun Disadvantages: Screen sometime freezes slightly
I bought thisDVD for the family for Xmas last year and I must say it's very entertaining.
We unwrapped it on Xmas morning but did not get a change to play it untill we visted the out laws just after Xmas.
Now the game is exactly as seen on telly. You start of low and aim for the million. We started of playing in two teams against each other but after some (more) alcohol the questions seemed to get harder! Seriously I think the questions might be slightly harder than on the telly (or maybe the audience and phone a friends are less intelligent). We ended up all playing as one team and we only ever made it to the £125.000 question. In other words we are a really stupid family! Anyway we had a good 5 hours worth of fun that evening.
As said the game works exactly as on the telly, you answer the question and have the same life ...

Advantages: Can be enjoyed by all the family! Disadvantages: I cannot think of any disadvantages to this product
I have to say that this is one of my favourite movies of all time, it looks amazing, the characters are adorable and the overall feeling you get from watching this is magical.
In my opinion Polar Express is the perfect film to watch at christmas time with all the family, both of my children (aged 4 & 5 the first time they watched it) loved it.
They are 6 & 7 now and we still bring this film out to watch again and again, we are now on our third copy! I have bought many copies of thisdvd in the past as it makes a perfect christmas gift for any child or movie loving adult!
Thisdvd is excellent value for money and I would highly recommend it to anyone!
We all absoloutley loved every second of it and I think that anybody would be happy with this product. ...
Like many holiday films, THIS CHRISTMAS mines the ample humour and drama of a family Christmas. Ma'Dere is the matriarch to the large and loving Whitfield family, which consists of her three daughters--Kelli, Lisa, and Mel--and her sons, Michael, Claude, and Quentin. They are an extremely attractive and successful bunch, but no sooner have they shared their first meal together than the hidden tensions begin to boil to the surface. Long-kept secrets come tumbling out, and the Whitfields soon engender enough drama to support several spin-off soap operas. There's interracial marriage, infidelity, gambling debts, an AWOL soldier, and repressed dreams of musical stardom, to name just a few of the issues they are forced to tackle in between stuffing the turkey and decorating the tree. Will their many problems and misunderstandings be resolved by Christmas day?

DVD Description
Like many holiday films, THIS CHRISTMAS mines the ample humour and drama of a family Christmas. Ma'Dere (Loretta Devine) is the matriarch to the large and loving Whitfield family, which consists of her three daughters--Kelli (Sharon Leal), Lisa (Regina King), and Mel (Lauren London)--and her sons, Michael (Chris Brown), Claude (Columbus Short), and Quentin (Idris Elba). Despite the often heavy subject matter, the film has the glow and sheen of a light-hearted romantic comedy. The characters may be awash in drama, but they contend with their troubles in impeccable wardrobes and settings, so that even the barroom brawls have an almost cosy look to them. While some might feel the packed storyline was in more need of trimming than the tree, the tidy ending makes for perfect feel-good holiday fare. If only all family discord could end with a dance-off to Kool And the Gang!
